Cervantes’ Architectures is the first book dedicated to architecture in Cervantes’ prose fiction. At a time when a pandemic is sweeping the world, this book reflects on the danger outside by concentrating on the role of enclosed structures as places where humans may feel safe, or as sites of beauty and harmony that provide solace. At the same time, a number of the architectures in Cervantes trigger dread and claustrophobia as they display a kind of shapelessness and a haunting aura that blends with the narrative. This volume invites readers to discover hundreds of edifices that Cervantes built with the pen. Their variety is astounding. The narrators and characters in these novels tell of castles, fortifications, inns, mills, prisons, palaces, towers, and villas which appear in their routes or in their conversations, and which welcome them, amaze them, or entrap them. Cervantes may describe actual buildings such as the Pantheon in Rome, or he may imagine structures that metamorphose before our eyes, as we come to view one architecture within another, and within another, creating an abyss of space. They deeply affect the characters as they feel enclosed, liberated, or suspended or as they look upon such structures with dread, relief, or admiration. Cervantes' Architectures sheds light on how places and spaces are perceived through words and how impossible structures find support, paradoxically, in the literary architecture of the work.

En la presente obra se lleva a cabo un estudio novedoso y original del concepto de obediencia en la doctrina filosófica y escolástica de la España de los Austria. Contemplada la cronología hispánica en su totalidad, cabría decir que los vasallos del rey de España vivieron sus tres siglos de imperio hablando y teorizando sobre la obediencia mucho más que sobre la rebeldía. Incluso durante los episodios de sublevaciones abiertas, el tema de la obediencia regresaba tercamente al centro del debate con el fin de desplazar a la incómoda y deshonrosa categoría de «rebelde», a la que nadie quería adscribirse. Sorprende, por tanto, la facilidad con que hasta hoy hemos osado interpretar algunos de los levantamientos más notables de la Monarquía, como el de las Comunidades en 1520, Flandes en 1566, Cataluña y Portugal en 1640 o Nápoles en 1647, sin antes haber profundizado lo bastante en las teorías de la obediencia que, si bien implícitas en muchos estudios dedicados a estos conflictos, reclaman un espacio propio. Términos y conceptos como autoridad, disciplina, castigo, disimulación, poder, justicia y tantos más guardan parentesco con la obediencia, incluso a veces la subsumían, pero ni la representaron ni la sustituyeron.

La memoria de los libros recoge el estudio, realizado por María Isabel Ostolaza, de las bibliotecas cistercienses navarras como parte del patrimonio librario anterior a la exclaustración de los monasterios. Los inventarios realizados en las desamortizaciones decimonónicas sirven como fuente de información para la reconstrucción, en gran parte virtual, de las bibliotecas monásticas, que en su parte más interesante proceden de las antiguas bibliotecas abaciales. Se ha desentrañado el eje vertebrador de la organización de las mismas que gira en torno a la Teología y abarca materias eclesiásticas, universitarias y de ciencias humanas, naturales y sociales. La obra recoge los inventarios de las bibliotecas de los monasterios de Fitero, Leire y La Oliva, incluyendo el inventario de la biblioteca de Marcilla. La elección del tema tiene que ver con la importancia que esta Orden tuvo en el contexto político y cultural del antiguo reino, dado que sus abades formaban parte del brazo eclesiástico de las Cortes.
