In Nocturnal Music in the Land of the Sufis Jürgen Wasim Frembgen takes the reader along on his fascinating mystical journeys into the musical worlds of Pakistan. In dense description he tells about his personal experiences and emotions while participating in ecstatic nights of music at Sufi shrines, attending trance rituals and listening enraptured to sublime and refined classical music in private music rooms in Lahore. In his ethnographic narrative he unfolds authentic cultural contexts and life worlds in which music is deeply embedded, tracing how music is perceived and 'tasted' by listeners.

The female voice plays a more central role in Sufi ritual, especially in the singing of devotional poetry, than in almost any other area of Muslim culture. Female singers perform sufiana-kalam, or mystical poetry, at Sufi shrines and in concerts, folk festivals, and domestic life, while male singers assume the female voice when singing the myths of heroines in qawwali and sufiana-kalam. Yet, despite the centrality of the female voice in Sufi practice throughout South Asia and the Middle East, it has received little scholarly attention and is largely unknown in the West. This book presents the first in-depth study of the female voice in Sufi practice in the subcontinent of Pakistan and India. Shemeem Burney Abbas investigates the rituals at the Sufi shrines and looks at women's participation in them, as well as male performers' use of the female voice. The strengths of the book are her use of interviews with both prominent and grassroots female and male musicians and her transliteration of audio- and videotaped performances. Through them, she draws vital connections between oral culture and the written Sufi poetry that the musicians sing for their audiences. This research clarifies why the female voice is so important in Sufi practice and underscores the many contributions of women to Sufism and its rituals.

Saints And Singers written by Peter Pannke and has been published by OUP Pakistan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12 with Music categories.

Sindh-the southernmost province of Pakistan-has a distinctive character of its own, setting it apart from other areas of the Islamic world. Nowhere else has Sufism gained such a stronghold. Shrines of Sufi saints are scattered all over the country, and still countless pilgrims flock to them. The cultural landscape of Sindh, however, is reaching far beyond the borders of the present province. Having been the cradle of many civilisations, some so old that we still lack any precise knowledge about them, the valley still provides the geographical and cultural backbone to a young country which displays a spectacular mix of cultures. Saints and Singers tell the story of the travels and adventures of the human soul in a myriad different ways, so that it may not be out of place to call it Pakistan's soul music. Whereas Qawwali, the most popular genre, made a spectacular entrance into the world music arena, most of the other manifold-and often equally interesting-expressions of Sufi music are still very little known by the western audience.
