Sesungguhnya, semua manusia memiliki dua sisi. Jiwa kita merindukan Tuhan, tetapi kepribadian kita mendambakan kesenangan dunia.

Once a woman brought her son to the thirteenth-century Turkish Sufi master Nasruddin complaining that the boy had an uncontrollable sweet tooth. She asked Nasruddin to tell the boy to stop eating sweets. He said to bring him back in four weeks. When they returned he said, “Boy, I order you to stop eating sweets!” The mother asked, “Couldn’t you have said that at the beginning? Why make us wait four weeks?” “No, I couldn’t have said that even two weeks ago,” Nasruddin replied. “Why not?” asked the mother. “Because I love sweets myself. First I had to control my own love for them. Only then could I tell your son to stop eating them.” That is, words are empty unless backed by experience, says Robert Frager. People will not change until they hear from those who have lived what they teach. Frager has indeed lived his teaching. Founder of the Institute for Transpersonal Psychology in 1975, in 1976 he became a student of the Sufi master Muzaffer Efendi. Since becoming a sheikh in 1985, he has given many sohbets-a Turkish word for the spiritual conversations Sufi teachers hold to inspire their students. The sohbets he presents here are compiled from his talks over the past decade and represent Sufism as it is now practiced in the United States. Frager believes that the wisdom in such talks flows through the sheikh from his teacher and his teacher’s teacher all the way back to the Prophet Mohammad and God; the sheikh is merely a channel for something greater than any individual. Moreover, these talks are not lectures but rather living connections going both ways between heart and heart. Indeed, the warm, personal immediacy to Frager’s voice is rarely found. Like the tales of Nasruddin, he teaches through colorful anecdote and metaphors. Sufi practice has two sides, he says: one is to develop our love of God; the other is to become less self-centered. We need both, just as a bird needs both wings to fly. “How can I put my knowledge into practice?” is the question we must ask. As the Qur’an states, those who fail to live by their understanding are like donkeys carrying a load of books. The books won’t change them. They can carry the holiest books but will still be donkeys. Among the practices Frager teaches are zikr, or remembrance of God through chanting; halvet, or spiritual retreat; and adab, or “right action.” Thus do we develop character-or, rather, restore the character we had at birth. “I’ve never seen a baby with a bad character,” he says. “We are all born in a pure state. With hard work and God’s blessings we can return to it.” Other topics include Obstacles on the Path, Reducing Narcissism, Inner Work, Prayer, Marriage, Generosity, Taking Responsibility, and Waking before We Die. No matter what one’s religion, the reader will find such universal wisdom in this book that he will agree with Frager’s teacher Muzaffer Efendi who once advised, “You can tell these stories ten thousand times and people will still benefit from them"

Love is the Wine presents an intoxicating mix of essays to satisfy the spiritual thirst of those with long experience in Islam, as well as those encountering Sufism and the meaning of spiritual love for the first time. Themes including generosity, faith, self-knowledge, patience, and love are developed with stories and teachings by Turkish Sufi master Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak. A mesmerizing storyteller, master teacher, and prolific author in his native country, he was ideally suited to bring the richness of the Sufi tradition to the West. The chapters of this book, skillfully edited and compiled by the psychologist and Sufi teacher Dr. Robert Frager, were derived from talks given during Sheikh Muzafffer’s visits to New York and California over the last years of his life. Sheikh Muzaffer Ozak understood Westerners as almost no Sufi master before him has. His religious bookshop in Istanbul attracted hundreds of Western seekers visiting Turkey. In his travels, he initiated hundreds of Americans and Europeans into the Halveti Jerrahi Order, interpreted their dreams, and answered their questions about everything from theology and mysticism to marriage and earning a living. These stories and teachings are memorable, yet highly enigmatic, and meant to be told and retold. Like great spiritual parables, the themes are universal and their applications ageless. The astute reader will appreciate new levels of meaning in these profound teaching tales with each reading. Love is the Wine is a treasury filled with priceless items of Sufi wisdom.

Seasons of Wisdom is mostly collated from the closing unscripted talks given by Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri to seal the annual conferences held by the Academy of Self Knowledge in South Africa. It was his love for Qur'an that brought about a situation of regularly sharing commentaries and delights in the eternal Truth that whatever is known and unknown emanates from one Cosmic Source that is not subject to space or time. "Every living entity is a combination of a mysterious divine spirit or soul, which provides life and is eternal and boundless in nature, and a physical identity which connects the divine attributes of the soul with all earthly, transient realities and shadows. With intelligence and faith you will realize how these descriptions will provide seeds of prescriptions. If you dwell on either, you realise they are two facets of the same reality. One describes and the other leads to responsibility and drive. From the inert to the dynamic and moving." Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri

In The Merging of Two Oceans, Pir Netanel Miles-Yépez follows his In the Teahouse of Experience with a new collection of talks, laying the foundations for understanding the historical and spiritual connections between Sufism and Hasidism, two of the world's great mystical traditions. He explores the many 'meetings' between these two traditions in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, details his own role in the formation of a new Sufi lineage connected with Hasidism, and gives a series of teachings drawing on both traditions. The Merging of Two Oceans is a book that will fascinate admirers of these traditions and their teachings. Praise for The Merging of Two Oceans "Pir Netanel's book opens further the doors of Jewish-Sufi cross-fertilization, offering beautiful stories and practices from both traditions, and furnishing interesting background material pertaining to the creation of the Inayati-Maimuni Order and its founding pir, Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. If you are someone whose soul is stirred by both the Sufi and Hasidic traditions, this is a book you will want to read." - Gregory Blann (Shaykh Muhammad Jamal al-Jerrahi), When Oceans Merge: The Contemporary Sufi and Hasidic Teachings of Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan and Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi "With The Merging of Two Oceans, Pir Netanel Miles-Yépez has brought us an important and long-overdue piece of scholarship, as soulful as it is erudite. Peppered with practices, teaching tales, and the history of the Sufi and Jewish mystical traditions' intertwining, The Merging of Two Oceans is an accessible and deeply nourishing read that many spiritual seekers will celebrate. " - Rabbi Tirzah Firestone, author of Wounds into Wisdom: Healing Intergenerational Jewish Trauma "Embracing the ancient maxim that "the height of human knowledge is to know that we do not know," Pir Netanel encourages us to embrace the interspiritual learning that has enriched Jews and Muslims, Hasidim and Sufis, for centuries. He describes how these two "oceans" commingled in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, and in the life of Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. The Merging of Two Oceans also recounts a story of friendship between rebbe and student and beautifully describes the author's ordination. Pir Netanel makes esoteric teachings accessible through references to contemporary literature and film, as well as history and stories, and philosophical, spiritual, and psychological wisdom gleaned from a contemplative reading of scripture. This rich context informs concrete advice on how to meditate and pray. If you find yourself at the uncomfortable 'crossroads of religions, ' Pir Netanel meets you there and lets you know you're not alone." - Father David Denny, co-founder of The Desert Foundation, and co-author of Desert Voices: The Edge Effect and "In this book, our dear brother Netanel Mu'in ad-Din has prepared a banquet of wisdom for the soul and mind that overflows with deep and detailed knowledge of tradition and practice. The clarity and mastery with which he explains the meeting and merging of these two traditions, Sufism and Hasidism, allows the reader to become familiar with the central teachings of both traditions in an accessible way, while also becoming acquainted with the nuances of their respective spiritual terminologies. In addition, by sharing details of his personal journey with his spiritual guide and the birth of a new lineage, he provides us with insights into the inner workings of the tradition, something that is often hidden and can only be speculated about. As a work that is at once spiritual manual, history and storytelling, this collection of talks can be seen as inspired by the malfuzat ('discourses') genre of Sufi literature." -Shaykh Issa Farajajé, Chishti-Nizami Sufi Shaykh
