Questions about how we know the world and how it appears according to our knowledge have been of significant interest from ancient times up to the present day. Philosophy and science go hand-in-hand in order to give answers to these fundamental questions. Some aspects of these have been turned into philosophical problems, which provoke a long-lasting and vivid discussion. This book provides answers to such philosophical problems on the basis of a sound and clearly presented argumentation. It will provoke the interest of a broad reading public across the globe, including philosophers, scientists, university students, and inquisitive readers.

Is the world we see around us really there? Is it ever right to do something wrong? Is beauty just a matter of opinion? Should everyone in society be paid the same? Are miracles possible? If you find questions like these fascinating, you are a philosopher. And if you are a philosopher, this book is for you. This book is aimed at classes of intelligent children aged 9 to 14. It contains thirty philosophy puzzles, like the ones above, divided into sections on: epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, philosophy of science, social & political philosophy, and philosophy of religion. Each puzzle starts with a discussion between Philip and Phoebe, an argumentative brother and sister, who take opposite sides on some important issue. Then follows a commentary, which explains what one or more famous philosophers have said on the topic in the past. Finally, there are related questions to discuss and one or more websites for research. This edition is intended for class use, so each introductory discussion can be read without its commentary being seen. It is accompanied by another, intended for teachers and parents, that contains extra commentary giving further philosophical background, plus suggestions about the questions at the end of each puzzle. Philip West taught students aged 8 to 18 for many years in a variety of schools. He has a degree in Natural Sciences, and a PhD in Philosophy and related subjects, both from Cambridge University. The puzzles originated in a popular Philosopher of the Week competition which he ran at Westminster Under School in London.

Paradox Lost written by Michael Huemer and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-28 with Philosophy categories.

Paradox Lost covers ten of philosophy’s most fascinating paradoxes, in which seemingly compelling reasoning leads to absurd conclusions. The following paradoxes are included: The Liar Paradox, in which a sentence says of itself that it is false. Is the sentence true or false? The Sorites Paradox, in which we imagine removing grains of sand one at a time from a heap of sand. Is there a particular grain whose removal converts the heap to a non-heap? The Puzzle of the Self-Torturer, in which a series of seemingly rational choices has us accepting a life of excruciating pain, in exchange for millions of dollars. Newcomb’s Problem, in which we seemingly maximize our expected profit by taking an unknown sum of money, rather than taking the same sum plus $1000. The Surprise Quiz Paradox, in which a professor finds that it is impossible to give a surprise quiz on any particular day of the week . . . but also that if this is so, then a surprise quiz can be given on any day. The Two Envelope Paradox, in which we are asked to choose between two indistinguishable envelopes, and it is seemingly shown that each envelope is preferable to the other. The Ravens Paradox, in which observing a purple shoe provides evidence that all ravens are black. The Shooting Room Paradox, in which a deadly game kills 90% of all who play, yet each individual’s survival turns on the flip of a fair coin. Each paradox is clearly described, common mistakes are explored, and a clear, logical solution offered. Paradox Lost will appeal to professional philosophers, students of philosophy, and all who love intellectual puzzles.

Philosophical Mysteries written by Stephen David Ross and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1981-06-30 with Philosophy categories.

"This is my major thesis. Mystery is inherent in both the nature of things and the nature of rationality. I will sustain this thesis by a review of some of the central issues of philosophy to elucidate their mysterious qualities. More important, however, I will develop in detail an explanation of mystery and trace some of its important ramifications." "I will argue that an ordinal metaphysics, with its associated theory of query, provides an account of mystery that no other theory can provide. "While the theory presented here is a theory of philosophical mystery, it has fundamental implications for all branches of knowledge, including the physical and social sciences. "In short, I speak against a simplistic view of the world and of experience based on a simplistic and narrow conception of understanding and rationality. Mystery calls not for veneration and awe, but for a full and complex activity of mind, broaching all established conditions in its pursuit of answers....Reason is fulfilled as completely in mysteries which persevere throughout our efforts to resolve them as in mysteries which are resolved and dissipated, passing into new questions to which we must find new answers, in an unterminating process of rational interrogation." — From the Preface by Stephen David Ross

Reading The Bible written by Robert D. Lane and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-04-28 with Religion categories.

This book argues that the best way to understand the stories of the Old and New Testaments is to consider them as human stories with sophisticated narrative techniques at play. God is a character in these stories from the beginning and considering god as a character in a narrative proves fruitful in responding to the human voices of these stories. Although many readers go to the Bible to find the revealed word of Yahweh or of the Christian God, what they find there is always an interpretation of the text through the filters of a religious dogma which exists prior to the reading of the text. Reading the Bible suggests another way of reading the texts, a way of reading which concentrates not on "what does it mean?" but on "what does it say?" and "what do I see there?" The result is a fresh approach to the reading of these biblical texts, an approach which celebrates human storytelling while investigating myth, language, and the act of reading a text.

Interpreting Across Boundaries written by Gerald James Larson and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-14 with Philosophy categories.

This volume is a "state-of-the-art" assessment of comparative philosophy written by some of the leading practitioners of the field. While its primary focus is on gaining methodological clarity regarding the comparative enterprise of "interpreting across boundaries," the book also contains new substantive essays on Indian, Chinese, Japanese, and European thought. The contributors are Roger T. Ames, William Theodore de Bary, Wing-tsit Chan, A. S. Cua, Eliot Deutsch, Charles Hartshorne, Daya Krishna, Gerald James Larson, Sengaku Mayeda, Hajime Nakamura, Raimundo Panikkar, Karl H. Potter, Henry Rosemont, Jr., Ben-Ami Scharfstein, Ninian Smart, Fritz Staal, and Frederick J. Streng. Comparative or cross-cultural philosophy can be seen as a relative newcomer to the field of philosophy. It has its antecedents in the emergence of comparative studies in nineteenth-century European intellectual history, as well as in the sequence of East-West Philosophers' Conferences at the University of Hawaii, which began in 1939. This book will prove to be of great significance in helping to define a field that is only now becoming fully self-conscious, methodologically and substantively, about its role and function in the larger enterprises of philosophy and comparative studies. Originally published in 1988. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
