Suicide and Agency offers an original and timely challenge to existing ways of understanding suicide. Through the use of rich and detailed case studies, the authors assembled in this volume explore how interplay of self-harm, suicide, personhood and agency varies markedly across site (Greenland, Siberia, India, Palestine and Mexico) and setting (self-run leprosy colony, suicide bomb attack, cash-crop farming, middle-class mothering). Rather than starting from a set definition of suicide, they empirically engage suicide fields-the wider domains of practices and of sense making, out of which realized, imaginary, or disputed suicides emerge. By drawing on ethnographic methods and approaches, a new comparative angle to understanding suicide beyond mainstream Western bio-medical and classical sociological conceptions of the act as an individual or social pathology is opened up. The book explores a number of ontological assumptions about the role of free will, power, good and evil, personhood, and intentionality in both popular and expert explanations of suicide. This book analyzes the social and contextual causes of suicide, the existential and philosophical reasons for committing suicide, and the prevention strategies that modern fictional literature places at our disposal. They go through the review of Modern fictional literature, in the American and European geographical framework, following the rationales that modern literature based on fiction can serve the purpose of understanding better the phenomenon of suicide, its most inaccessible impulses, and that has the potential to prevent suicide. From the turn of the 20th century to the present, debates over the meaning of suicide became a privileged site for efforts to discover the reasons why people commit suicide and how to prevent this behavior. Since the French sociologist and philosopher Émile Durkheim published his study Suicide: A Study in Sociology in 1897, a reframing of suicide took place, giving rise to a flourishing group of researchers and authors devoting their efforts to understand better the causes of suicide and to the formation of suicide prevention organizations. A century later, we still keep on trying to reach such an understanding of suicide, the nature, and nuances of its modern conceptualization, to prevent suicidal behaviors. The question of what suicide means in and for modernity is not an overcome one. Suicide is an act that touches all of our lives and engages with the incomprehensible and unsayable. Since the turn of the millennium, a fierce debate about the state’s role in assisted suicide has been adopted. Moral evaluations of actions are only appropriate for actions within the moral domain. Actions outside of the moral domain are amoral actions. In Why Suicide Is Amoral: A Philosophical Account, Robyn Gaier emphasizes the role of agency in determining whether an action is within the moral domain. If an agent lacks either deliberative agency or moral agency, then their action is amoral. An agent lacks deliberative agency if they cannot evaluate and act upon reasons, and moral agency if they cannot act upon moral reasons. Actions in which such agencies are compromised are also amoral actions. In treating actions of suicide, while granting their diversity, this book traces them to the loss or threat of loss of basic psychological needs. Gaier argues that when basic psychological needs are lost or under threat, an agent’s deliberative agency, moral agency, or both are either lacking or compromised. Hence, actions of suicide are amoral, and it is a conceptual mistake to attempt the moral evaluation of actions of suicide. Furthermore, when we regard actions of suicide as within the moral domain, we perpetuate a social stigma against suicide.

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. It is all too easy to begin the introduction of a book examining suicide by citing statistics on rates of death around the world. The vast majority of research seeks to make sense of suicide through quantitative analysis; however, this does not begin to do justice to the lived experience. While we do not wish to suggest there is one ‘right’ lens through which to study suicide, we must recognize that there are myriad lenses though which to examine it. There are many voices, many stories that must be heeded, and these stories are not just of the people who have themselves died by suicide, but also those who are or have been suicidal and those who have been bereaved by suicide. By examining cultural perspectives, different media, memory and place, as well as loss, this book aims to tell stories of suicide and working and living with the suicidal.

Recent estimates by The World Health Organisation and The World Bank indicate that throughout the world each and every year more than 800,000 persons die as a consequence of suicide. This means that the death toll of suicide equals and in many countries even exceeds that of road traffic accidents. In addition to the number of suicidal deaths, at least ten times as many persons make non-fatal attempts to take their lives or harm themselves, often seriously enough to require medical attention and not infrequently resulting in irreversible disability. But still these figures inadequately describe the magnitude of human loss and suffering caused by suicide. If one assumes that for every suicidal death there are at least five persons whose lives are profoundly and often for many years affected by the event -emotionally, socially and economically-, by the event, then each year millions of survivor-victims are added to the tens of millions already 'out there'. Hence, suicide is an ever-recurring catastrophe of the first degree. It is not a phenomenon that first and foremost forms a dubious privilege of the so-called highly developed countries. Suicide also occurs in the developing countries and there is more than suggestive evidence that in several of these countries the suicide rate equals or even surpasses the highest national rates shown by offical statistics. It follows that suicide is an extremely important public health problem. It is, however, a problem that is painfully neglected. Throughout the world, resources devoted to the prevention of suicide are only a tiny fraction of those devoted to the prevention of comparable problems, such as road traffic accidents, or to problems of lesser magnitude, at least in the industrialized countries, such as HIV-infection and Aids. This volume, produced under the supervision and auspices of the World Health Organization, brings together for the first time information on epidemiological, clinical and preventive intervention aspects regarding suicide that have global significance and applicability. After a detailed description of the epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behaviour on an international scale, a large part of the book is devoted to the 'how-to's' of developing and organizing suicide prevention programs and services in different national and cultural settings, both at clinical and community level. In addition, a wealth of practical information for health care workers and volunteers is provided on how to evaluate and deal with acute suicide risk. Examples of successful preventive intervention programs and projects, from the developed as well as the developing world, are provided. Legal and ethical problems involved in suicide prevention are also discussed. Finally, both cultural and biological aspects of suicidal behaviour, as well as their clinical-practice relevance, are examined.
