Obwohl Suizid demnach einen nicht unerheblichen Teil der Todesursachen ausmacht, wurde er lange öffentlich tabuisiert: Beispielsweise galt Selbstmord zu Zeiten altrömischer Herrschaft sowohl für Männer als auch für Frauen als „Verbrechen gegen die Gesellschaft“ (Rübenach, 2007). Mit der Entwicklung des Denkens und der Gesellschaft änderte sich der Umgang mit der Thematik. In der Wissenschaft beschäftigen sich unterschiedliche Gebiete mit der Erklärung von Suiziden. Während Selbsttötung „nach psychiatrischem Verständnis als Ende einer krankhaften Entwicklung“ (Rübenach, 2007) gilt, untersucht der Fachbereich der Soziologie das Phänomen Selbstmord auf sozialer Ebene. Dazu gehört der Zusammenhang zwischen gesellschaftlichen Entwicklungen und der Suizidrate in verschiedenen Gesellschaften. Bereits im 19. Jahrhundert thematisierte der französische Soziologe und Ethnologe Émile Durkheim in seiner Studie „Der Selbstmord“ diese Beziehungen. Durkheim untersucht hierbei nicht den Selbstmord anhand einzelner Fälle auf dessen individuelle Ursachen, sondern er betrachtet ihn streng soziologisch als soziales Phänomen mit ebenso sozialen Kriterien. Die vorliegende Arbeit beleuchtet die Todesursache Suizid aus soziologischer Sicht. Zentral ist hierbei die inhaltliche Untersuchung Émile Durkheims Selbstmordstudie aus dem Jahr 1897. Daraus folgernd wird die Frage beantwortet, inwieweit Suizid objektiv betrachtet als soziales Phänomen betrachtet werden kann. Zu Beginn der Arbeit wird die Definition des Selbstmordbegriffes vorgestellt und erläutert, wie Durkheim zu dieser gelangte. Im Anschluss daran geht es zunächst um die Untersuchung außer-gesellschaftlicher Faktoren, bevor im nachfolgenden Kapitel die sozialen Aspekte begründet und die drei Selbstmordtypen vorgestellt werden. Darauf auf-bauend dient das sechste Kapitel dazu, herauszuarbeiten, wie Durkheim seine These rechtfertigt, Selbstmord als ein soziales Phänomen zu betrachten. Auf diesen Grund-lagen soll die Arbeit mit Beantwortung der anfangs gestellten Frage abschließen: Inwiefern kann Selbstmord nach Émile Durkheim als ein soziales Phänomen betrachtet werden??

Dazu soll nach einer Definition von Selbstmord bzw. Suizid für diese Arbeit zunächst Durkheims Studie zum Selbstmord und ihre Bedeutung für die Soziologie als Wissenschaft dargestellt werden. Im Anschluss werden überblickartig weitere sozialwissenschaftliche Theorien der soziologischen Suizidforschungen der Gegenwart vorgestellt. Auch Christa Lindner-Braun beobachtet, wie ein spezifischer Gesellschaftszustand die Suizidrate einer Gesellschaft bestimmen kann. Die Theorien werden gegenübergestellt und kritisch hinterfragt, denn die Analysen Durkheims scheinen aus heutiger Sicht ungenügend. Abschließend erfolgt ein Fazit. Der Soziologe Émile Durkheim vertrat die These, dass für Selbstmord der Grund ein soziologisches Problem ist, das in diesem Kontext nicht durch Psychologie zu erklären sei. Selbstmord sei zwar eine individuelle und private Entscheidung, aber gesellschaftlich bedingt. Durkheim äußert, dass eine Erklärung „weder in der organisch-psychischen Verfassung der Individuen noch in der Beschaffenheit ihrer physischen Umwelt“ zu finden ist. Dazu erläutert er zwei Formen gesellschaftlicher Integration. Das Verhalten der Individuen wird einerseits maßgeblich von gesellschaftlichen Normen bestimmt, und andererseits bedeutet Integration soziokulturell, dass Akteure entweder als Gruppenmitglied oder als Individuum handeln. So ist Durkheims Ziel, den Selbstmord im sozialen Kontext zu erklären. Dabei verfolgt er die Erklärung der Unterschiede kollektiver Selbstmordraten, wobei die Rate als Indikator für den Zustand des Kollektivbewusstseins zu betrachten ist. Zudem beschreibt er vier Grundtypen des Selbstmords, die auf unterschiedlichen sozialen Ursachen beruhen.

This book might be said to be the exploration, first, of the 'fateful' consequences, and subsequently-by a poetic transference of situation-of the fortunate, happy consequences of impossible exchange.
