Der Begriff des Politischen (1927) è il saggio più importante e famoso di Carl Schmitt. In esso il giurista tedesco muove da un quesito semplice e apparentemente banale: se bello e brutto sono le categorie dell’estetica, giusto e ingiusto (e buono e cattivo) lo sono della morale, utile e dannoso dell’economia, e così via, quali sono le categorie della politica? Quest’ultima – risponde Schmitt – è necessariamente incardinata sulla distinzione amico/nemico. L’esistenza dell’hostis latino – cioè del “nemico pubblico”, ben diverso dal nemico privato (inimicus) – rende possibile l’aggregazione politica, la quale, per sua natura, include alcuni ed esclude altri, che perciò costituiscono un’insidia almeno potenziale. Frutto del clima e delle lacerazioni della Repubblica di Weimar, con il trascorrere del tempo Begriff des Politischen è divenuto uno snodo fondamentale della riflessione sul potere, offrendosi ai lettori come l’ultimo classico della tradizione machiavelliana del “realismo politico”.

Quest'opera fa parte di un più vasto lavoro di ricerca sul neo-idealismo italiano in rapporto alla politica. Il titolo - filosofia e politica - è di per sé significativo: sta a indicare chiaramente la direzione e il tipo dell'indagine, che non è empirica ma trascendentale, non riguarda cioè la dottrina politica e le scelte pratiche di Croce, staccate dall'organismo del pensiero in cui s'incorporano e analizzate alla luce di alcune categorie, magari psicologiche e sociologiche; ma riguarda i presupposti teoretici che stanno a fondamento di quella dottrina e di quelle scelte. Scartato, perché fuorviante, il metodo di quelle due «false scienze» che sono la psicologia e la sociologia, l'Autore ha tentato un discorso schiettamente filosofico, che è poi discorso di fondazione e di deduzione. Per questo è stato necessario procedere a una lettura integrale di Croce, avendo in una mano l'esperienza dei «testi» e nell'altra quella categoria della «totalità», che è più facile da invocare che da impiegare. Ma è stato necessario anche dare al lavoro un «taglio» particolare, in modo da evitare le semplificazioni eccessive e le sintesi sommarie, per andare direttamente al cuore dei problemi. L'impostazione metodologica ha richiesto da una parte l'adesione all'universo spirituale dell'autore studiato, e dall'altra l'obiettivo distaccato scientifico: due condizioni fondamentali, queste, che solo in apparenza si escludono, perché in realtà si conciliano riassumendosi nel concetto di «critica interna». After the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951, Hannah Arendt undertook an investigation of Marxism, a subject that she had deliberately left out of her earlier work. Although written in the latter half of the 1950s, what Arendt says about the relation of politics to human freedom could hardly have greater relevance for our own time. When politics is considered as a means to an end that lies outside of itself, when force is used to “create” freedom, political principles vanish from the face of the earth. For Arendt, politics has no “end”; instead, it has at times been–and perhaps can be again–the never-ending endeavor of the great plurality of human beings to live together and share the earth in mutually guaranteed freedom. That is the promise of politics.
