Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I would like to begin at the beginning, but there are a hundred places to start and a hundred names. I can begin by choosing one of them, not because it is first or of any importance in a wildly adventurous sense, but because it is turned uppermost in my logbook. #2 Nungwe was a town that lay west and south of Nairobi on the southernmost rim of Lake Victoria Nyanza. It was barely alive when I went there in 1935. It was a Mecca for gold miners, who had begun to dig there. #3 Nairobi was a gateway to a new country, and it was growing quickly. It was a place of shillings and pounds and land sales and trade, extraordinary successes and failures. Its shops sold whatever you needed to buy. #4 Africa is a land full of mysteries, wildness, and heat. It is a photographer’s paradise, a hunter’s Valhalla, and an escapist’s Utopia. It is what you want it to be, and it withstands all interpretations. It is the last vestige of a dead world or the cradle of a shiny new one.

ABOUT THE BOOK I’ve always been interested in women in history, particularly those of the 20th century. Somehow, though, I had never heard of Beryl Markham until I came across her book, “West With the Night,” about a year or so ago. The cover’s engaging portrait of Markham, looking patrician and quite beautiful in her aviator helmet, immediately drew my attention. As I began to read the account of her life, I was quickly hooked by her fascinating description of life in British East Africa (today known as Kenya) in the early 1900s: Imagine taking off in a two-seater plane and narrowly avoiding a zebra. My impression was confirmed the more I read: Markham was clearly a woman who lived in a completely different world than I do in 21st century America: She bred championship racehorses. She flew planes into remote parts of Africa. And she managed to write about it without a hint of boasting. Her writing is simple and honest. No less a writer than Ernest Hemingway, a friend of Markham’s, praised the book as “bloody wonderful” in a letter to Maxwell Perkins, as cited on the back cover of the 1983 edition of West with the Night). Markham’s account showed me that life is meant to be lived to the full. Taking risks and trying new things is what gives life its savor. Telling other’s about one’s adventures allows them to savor them too. MEET THE AUTHOR Laura Brestovansky has more than 20 years of writing/editing/proofreading experience, including blogs, e-books, articles, brochures, press releases and more. Currently, she is also the public relations liaison for Caregivers Professional Resources (www.cprmich.com), whose duties include writing the CPR Airway blog. She has written on a number of topics, including health care, home improvement, travel, religion and social issues. She graduated with honors from Eastern Michigan University, majoring in journalism and political science. When she’s not on the computer (whether writing, editing or surfing), she’s spending time with her husband and three children, possibly biking or hiking with them or watching a classic movie. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK West With the Night is Beryl Markham’s memoir of her life in British East Africa (Kenya). She was a racehorse breeder, bush pilot and the first woman to fly across the Atlantic from east to west. The book begins with Markham’s review of an old flight logbook, which sets the scene for the entire book -- British East Africa in the 1930s. Once setting the scene she recounts her journey to deliver oxygen to a sick minor: “-- a job to be done at an uncomfortable hour with sleep in my eyes and a half a grumble on my lips.” While the flight itself is routine, Markham flies with the knowledge that a friend and fellow pilot is missing in the Serengeti.

A stylish, sexy page-turner set in Paris on the eve of World War II, where Clementine, a queer American ex-pat and notorious thief, is drawn out of retirement and into one last scam when the Nazis invade. "A hint of Moulin Rouge, a whiff of Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale, a little spritz of Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief... The Perfume Thief is a pulse-pounding thriller and a sensuous experience you’ll want to savor."—Oprah Daily "[A] superb novel ... This is historical fiction at its finest, vivid and beautifully rendered." —Emily St. John Mandel, author of The Sea of Tranquility Clementine is a seventy-two year-old reformed con artist with a penchant for impeccably tailored suits. Her life of crime has led her from the uber-wealthy perfume junkies of belle epoque Manhattan, to the scented butterflies of Costa Rica, to the spice markets of Marrakech, and finally the bordellos of Paris, where she settles down in 1930 and opens a shop bottling her favorite extracts for the ladies of the cabarets. Now it's 1941 and Clem's favorite haunt, Madame Boulette's, is crawling with Nazis, while Clem's people--the outsiders, the artists, and the hustlers who used to call it home--are disappearing. Clem's first instinct is to go to ground--it's a frigid Paris winter and she's too old to put up a fight. But when the cabaret's prize songbird, Zoe St. Angel, recruits Clem to steal the recipe book of a now-missing famous Parisian perfumer, she can't say no. Her mark is Oskar Voss, a Francophile Nazi bureaucrat, who wants the book and Clem's expertise to himself. Hoping to buy the time and trust she needs to pull off her scheme, Clem settles on a novel strategy: Telling Voss the truth about the life and loves she came to Paris to escape. Complete with romance, espionage, champagne towers, and haute couture, this full-tilt sensory experience is a dazzling portrait of the underground resistance of twentieth-century Paris and a passionate love letter to the power of beauty and community in the face of insidious hate.

Beryl Markham, like Karen Blixen, could only have come out of Africa. Pioneering aviatrix, flamboyant beauty, brilliant race-horse trainer, unscrupulous seducer - her life story is for every reader who was enthralled by Blixen's exotic world, that of Kenya between the wars. This fully authorised biography, drawn from the author's personal association with Beryl and her family, paints a vivid portrait of a tempestuous and controversial character. It tells of her friendship with Karen Blixen (though she commandeered Blixen's husband Bror and lover Denys Finch Hatton), of her spectacular courage when she became the first person to fly from England to America, and of the mysteries surrounding her highly praised, bestselling book WEST WITH THE NIGHT.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR, BOOKPAGE, AND SHELF AWARENESS • “Paula McLain is considered the new star of historical fiction, and for good reason. Fans of The Paris Wife will be captivated by Circling the Sun, which . . . is both beautifully written and utterly engrossing.”—Ann Patchett, Country Living This powerful novel transports readers to the breathtaking world of Out of Africa—1920s Kenya—and reveals the extraordinary adventures of Beryl Markham, a woman before her time. Brought to Kenya from England by pioneering parents dreaming of a new life on an African farm, Beryl is raised unconventionally, developing a fierce will and a love of all things wild. But after everything she knows and trusts dissolves, headstrong young Beryl is flung into a string of disastrous relationships, then becomes caught up in a passionate love triangle with the irresistible safari hunter Denys Finch Hatton and the writer Baroness Karen Blixen. Brave and audacious and contradictory, Beryl will risk everything to have Denys’s love, but it’s ultimately her own heart she must conquer to embrace her true calling and her destiny: to fly. Praise for Circling the Sun “In McLain’s confident hands, Beryl Markham crackles to life, and we readers truly understand what made a woman so far ahead of her time believe she had the power to soar.”—Jodi Picoult, author of Leaving Time “Enchanting . . . a worthy heir to [Isak] Dinesen . . . Like Africa as it’s so gorgeously depicted here, this novel will never let you go.”—The Boston Globe “Famed aviator Beryl Markham is a novelist’s dream. . . . [A] wonderful portrait of a complex woman who lived—defiantly—on her own terms.”—People (Book of the Week) “Circling the Sun soars.”—Newsday “Captivating . . . [an] irresistible novel.”—The Seattle Times “Like its high-flying subject, Circling the Sun is audacious and glamorous and hard not to be drawn in by. Beryl Markham may have married more than once, but she was nobody’s wife.”—Entertainment Weekly “[An] eloquent evocation of Beryl’s daring life.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

Too Close To The Sun written by Sara Wheeler and has been published by Random House this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-24 with History categories.

Denys Finch Hatton was adored by women and idolized by men. A champion of Africa, legendary for his good looks, his charm, and his prowess as a soldier, lover, and hunter, Finch Hatton inspired Karen Blixen to write the unforgettable stories in Out of Africa. Now esteemed British biographer Sara Wheeler tells the truth about this extraordinarily charismatic adventurer. Born to an old aristocratic family that had gambled away most of its fortune, Finch Hatton grew up in a world of effortless elegance and boundless power. Tall and graceful, with the soul of a poet and an athlete’s relaxed masculinity, he became a hero without trying at Eton and Oxford. In 1910, searching for novelty and danger, Finch Hatton arrived in British East Africa and fell in love–with a continent, with a landscape, with a way of life that was about to change forever. Wheeler brilliantly conjures the mystical beauty of Kenya at a time when teeming herds of wild animals roamed unmolested across pristine savannah. No one was more deeply attuned to this beauty than Finch Hatton–and no one more bitterly mourned its passing when the outbreak of World War I engulfed the region in a protracted, bloody guerrilla conflict. Finch Hatton was serving as a captain in the Allied forces when he met Karen Blixen in Nairobi and embarked on one of the great love affairs of the twentieth century. With delicacy and grace, Wheeler teases out truth from fiction in the liaison that Blixen herself immortalized in Out of Africa. Intellectual equals, bound by their love for the continent and their inimitable sense of style, Finch Hatton and Blixen were genuine pioneers in a land that was quickly being transformed by violence, greed, and bigotry. Ever restless, Finch Hatton wandered into a career as a big-game hunter and became an expert bush pilot; his passion that led to his affair with the notoriously unconventional aviatrix Beryl Markham. But Markham was no more able to hold him than Blixen had been. Mesmerized all his life by the allure of freedom and danger, Finch Hatton was, writes Wheeler, “the open road made flesh.” In painting a portrait of an irresistible man, Sara Wheeler has beautifully captured the heady glamour of the vanished paradise of colonial East Africa. In Too Close to the Sun she has crafted a book that is as ravishing as its subject.
