Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was excited to be heading to Vietnam, where I would be able to find answers to my many questions about war and my role in it. I was surprised at the number of lights below. I had always thought that a war zone would be blacked out, but the jewels of lights spread haphazardly through the dark. #2 I was waiting with my duffle bag and flight bag at the airport, long before transportation arrived to take us to the camp. Vietnamese were everywhere, on the roads and in the camp. They were in places I thought would be taboo on a military base. #3 I was assigned to the supply sergeant for my equipment. He gave me two sets of jungle fatigues, olive-drab underwear, a towel, and a M-16 rifle with magazines. He told me to stuff all of my other junk into my duffle bag. #4 I was transferred to the Third Brigade of the Fourth Division, located in Due Pho, Vietnam. The camp was fully developed to the west, and more units were assigned areas in a steadily encroaching circle around to the east side, toward the sea.

An insightful look into the immediate and long-term impact of the Vietnam War on a wide range of people and social groups, both Americans in the United States and in Vietnam. This collection of essays by highly respected social historians looks at the Vietnam War era through the eyes of the ordinary citizens caught up in those tumultuous times. Focusing on the period between 1961 and 1975—from the dramatic U.S. military escalation to the fall of Saigon—it offers fresh insight on the impact of the war on individuals on the home front and the battlefront. Each chapter of Vietnam War Era: People and Perspectives examines how a particular group of Americans interacted with the war and its related issues, among them military advisors and soldiers, the silent majority and antiwar activists, women, labor unions, African Americans, students, government leaders, veterans, the media, and religious communities. The authors draw clear connections between the stories of individual lives and the larger social movements that defined the era's human drama.

American Soldiers written by Peter S. Kindsvatter and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-04-03 with History categories.

Some warriors are drawn to the thrill of combat and find it the defining moment of their lives. Others fall victim to fear, exhaustion, impaired reasoning, and despair. This was certainly true for twentieth-century American ground troops. Whether embracing or being demoralized by war, these men risked their lives for causes larger than themselves with no promise of safe return. This book is the first to synthesize the wartime experiences of American combat soldiers, from the doughboys of World War I to the grunts of Vietnam. Focusing on both soldiers and marines, it draws on histories and memoirs, oral histories, psychological and sociological studies, and even fiction to show that their experiences remain fundamentally the same regardless of the enemy, terrain, training, or weaponry. Peter Kindsvatter gets inside the minds of American soldiers to reveal what motivated them to serve and how they were turned into soldiers. He recreates the physical and emotional aspects of war to tell how fighting men dealt with danger and hardship, and he explores the roles of comradeship, leadership, and the sustaining beliefs in cause and country. He also illuminates soldiers’ attitudes toward the enemy, toward the rear echelon, and toward the home front. And he tells why some broke down under fire while others excelled. Here are the first tastes of battle, as when a green recruit reported that “for the first time I realized that the people over the ridge wanted to kill me,” while another was befuddled by the unfamiliar sound of bullets whizzing overhead. Here are soldiers struggling to cope with war’s stress by seeking solace from local women or simply smoking cigarettes. And here are tales of combat avoidance and fraggings not unique to Vietnam, of soldiers in Korea disgruntled over home-front indifference, and of the unique experiences of African American soldiers in the Jim Crow army. By capturing the core “band of brothers” experience across several generations of warfare, Kindsvatter celebrates the American soldier while helping us to better understand war’s lethal reality--and why soldiers persevere in the face of its horrors.
