Sample Book Insights: #1 The German invasion of Belgium began on 5 August, when 2nd and 4th Cavalry Divisions crossed the Meuse River at Liège and headed toward the Dutch-Belgian border. They encountered many Belgian troops who were dug in east and south-west of Tirlemont. The Germans decided to outflank them to the north, and the two divisions were temporarily disengaged and pulled back to the area east of Saint-Trond. #2 The 2nd Cavalry Division marched to Steevort, on the Haelen road, and formed up in line ahead. The 4th Cavalry Division was ordered to open the passage of the Gette at Haelen, with 2nd Cavalry Division leading the charge and securing the ground northwards in the direction of Lummen. #3 The German cavalry was deployed to attack Haelen, and was met by Belgian skirmishers, machine guns, and batteries. The attack was shattered by a hail of defensive fire. The German losses were extremely heavy. #4 The Belgian cavalry division had been positioned behind the Gette between Budingen and Diest with the purpose of holding that sector and pushing reconnaissance patrols in the direction of Tongres, Beeringen, and Quaedmechelen. The villages of Budingen, Geet-Betz, and Haelen had been put in a state of defense, and all the bridges over the Gette had been destroyed except for the two at Haelen and Zelck.

Germany's opening run of victory in World War II was only made possible by the panzer forces that Heinz Guderian (1888-1954), the father of modern tank warfare, had created and trained, and by his audacious leading of those forces from 1939-1941. Guderian's breakthrough at Sedan and lightning drive to the Channel coast virtually decided the Battle of France. The drive he led into the East came close to producing the complete collapse of Russia's armies, but at the end of 1941 Guderian was dismissed for taking a timely step back instead of pandering to Hitler's illusions. Biographers and historians have lionized Heinz Guderian as the legendary father of the German armored force and brilliant practitioner of blitzkrieg maneuver warfare. As Russell A. Hart argues, Guderian created this legend with his own highly influential yet self-serving and distorted memoir, which remains one of the most widely read accounts of the Second World War. Unfortunately, too many of Guderian's biographers have accepted his view of his accomplishments at face value, without sufficient critical scrutiny, resulting in an undeserved hagiography. In the end, he distorted the truth to establish his place in history. In the process, he denigrated the myriad important contributions of his fellow officers as he took personal credit for what were, in reality, collective accomplishments. Thus, he succeeded in creating a legend that has endured long after his death. This brief biography puts the record straight by placing Guderian's career and accomplishments into sharper and more accurate relief. It exposes the real Heinz Guderian, not the man of legend.
