Camp Auctus for Girls is a summer sleep-away camp focused on leadership. Julia cherishes the memories of her summer there with her best friend and cousin, Elizabeth, who was shot to death at the age of ten. Three years after the shooting, in 2041, thirteen-year-old Julia returns to camp. She's been asked to make a speech in honor of Elizabeth, but she doesn't know how. Try as she might, she can't make sense of the tragedy. Then her counselor, Ms. Caroline, starts telling Julia stories about her mother, Rebecca, and Elizabeth's mother, Lisa, from their time at camp. Julia listens eagerly as Ms. Caroline begins to paint a picture of the year 2014-when her mother was her age. Eventually, the coming-of-age stories of her mother and aunt help Julia understand two things: that our friendships are crucial in defining who we are and that it's vital to fight for what we believe in. That knowledge helps Julia find the words and courage to deliver a powerful speech expressing her anger about her cousin's death and her hope for a future where gun laws can finally change.

A brilliantly written and groundbreaking book about Dylan's music – now the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature 2016 – and its musical, political and cultural roots in early 20th-century America Growing up in Greenwich Village in the 1960s Sean Wilentz discovered the music of Bob Dylan as a young teenager. Almost half a century later, now a distinguished professor of American history, he revisits Dylan's work with the critical skills of a scholar and the passion of a fan. Drawing partly on his work as the current historian-in-residence on Dylan's official website, Sean Wilentz provides a unique blend of biography, memoir and analysis in a book which, much like its subject, shifts gears and changes shape as the occasion demands.

Like a phoenix, the twins Kevin and Robert and their younger brother Jonah, experience a rebirth after they barely survive the catastrophic house fire that killed their father and older brother. Now is their chance to start fresh in a new town with a loving adoptive family. The boys thrive in their new home, and they experience many of the typical ups and downs of a “normal” childhood in the 1950s. They are free of the abuses and draconian restrictions that their late father visited upon them after he became obsessed with the fanatical doctrines of the Radio Church of God. Kevin soon makes a desperate attempt to prevent a large family from falling victim to that abusive religious cult. The brothers can now freely pursue their own interests, the most alluring of which, are fledgling romantic relationships. Kevin gets bitten by the technology bug, and he starts building a number of electronic projects including a vacuum tube shortwave transmitter. But the boys’ new life is tarnished when ominous vaguely written letters start to arrive at their new home that seemingly blame them for the house fire that resulted in the deaths of their father and older sibling. Although the boys bravely try to get on with their lives, their world soon comes crashing down when an unknown enemy decides it is time to take retribution on them for a sin they did not commit. Rebirth is the second book in the Threefold Cord series that follows the lives of the three young brothers who have developed an unbreakable bond with one another. A combination of nostalgia, youthful adventures, misadventures, and intrigue, this book is a delightful mix of genres that will keep readers entertained and enthralled until the last page.

There were three kinds of people in this world: men and women, and lunatics like Chi Yinan. Unfortunately, not only did Su Wenjin provoke this lunatic, he even married him. One night before the wedding, Chi Yinan lifted the quilt and gazed at the woman's belly with a burning gaze. "Warmth, you haven't exercised for a long time." Su Wenjin raised his head, touched his belly and pursed his lips, "Meat is warmer in winter." Chi Yinan was not moved at all. He leaned over and said, "Why don't you let me help you reduce it?" Su Wenjin's eyes narrowed as he leaned his body back. Chi Yinan narrowed his eyes and took a step forward without any sense of integrity.

Written in conjunction with the documentary Rebirth, a full decade in the making, an uplifting look at the lives of nine individuals whose lives were forever changed by the largest tragedy our nation has ever faced. The images of the burning towers, the heartbroken friends building memorials, the minute-by-minute accounts of the horrors of that day-all are indelibly etched on our collective consciousness. But what of those left behind after 9/11? What have they, and we, learned from the gift of time? In Project Rebirth, a psychologist and a journalist examine the lives of nine people who were directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001. Written concurrently with the filming of a forthcoming documentary, it is uniquely positioned to tackle the questions raised about how people react in the face of crippling grief, how you maintain hope for a future when your life as you knew it is destroyed, and the amazing ability of humans to focus on the positive aspects of day-to-day living in the face of tragedy. The project follows people dedicated to rebuilding, both physically and emotionally. Spirituality, resilience, and hope are at the center of their stories. Brian, who lost his firefighter brother, spent two years working at Ground Zero and then helped to rebuild the PATH train station. Tanya, who lost her fiancée on 9/11, finds new love, new life, and joy as a mother in the years following, all doors she thought closed to her forever. Not a book that recounts the events of that day, and not a book about grief, Project Rebirth is a book about resilience and finding inner peace.

The Rebirth Of Environmentalism written by Douglas Bevington and has been published by Island Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-22 with Science categories.

Over the past two decades, a select group of small but highly effective grassroots organizations have achieved remarkable success in protecting endangered species and forests in the United States. The Rebirth of Environmentalism tells for the first time the story of these grassroots biodiversity groups. Author Douglas Bevington offers engaging case studies of three of the most influential biodiversity protection campaigns—the Headwaters Forest campaign, the “zero cut” campaign on national forests, and the endangered species litigation campaign exemplified by the Center for Biological Diversity—providing the reader with an in-depth understanding of the experience of being involved in grassroots activism. Based on first-person interviews with key activists in these campaigns, the author explores the role of tactics, strategy, funding, organization, movement culture, and political conditions in shaping the influence of the groups. He also examines the challenging relationship between radicals and moderate groups within the environmental movement, and addresses how grassroots organizations were able to overcome constraints that had limited the advocacy of other environmental organizations. Filled with inspiring stories of activists, groups, and campaigns that most readers will not have encountered before, The Rebirth of Environmentalism explores how grassroots biodiversity groups have had such a big impact despite their scant resources, and presents valuable lessons that can help the environmental movement as a whole—as well as other social movements—become more effective.
