The author was looking forward to a great holiday on the palm-fringed beaches of the many beautiful islands on Thailand's coast. He was travelling alone and had booked a flight to Bangkok via the Maldives and Sri Lanka. His anticipation was intense as the plane took off from the UK late on Christmas Day 2004. On the morning of December 26th his plane, having been unable to land in the Maldives was diverted to the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo. Unknown to those on board a massive earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra had unleashed a tsunami of devastating proportions. A series waves up to 30 metres high moved across the Indian ocean at the speed of a jet liner, striking the coastline of eleven countries from Thailand to the east coast of Africa. By the end of that day over a quarter of a million people were dead or missing and millions more were homeless, probably making it the worst tsunami and natural disaster in modern human recorded history. The author's eyewitness log offers the reader an account of a life changing experience.
