Asal usul teka teki (sundait) sukar diketahui data empiriknya sebab ia berbentuk sastera lisan dan bukan untuk dituliskan tetapi hanya ditutur oleh generasi sebelum kepada generasi-generasi seterusnya. Pada zaman dahulu sesuatu maksud yang hendak diucapkan itu perlu dirahsiahkan supaya jangan dapat diteka oleh hantu yang jahat. Ucapan begini hanya perlu dilakukan pada waktu tertentu sahaja. Kepercayaan dan amalan ini pernah dijumpai dalam masyarakat suku Toraja Barat dan Toraja Bara’e yang terdapat di pedalaman Sulawesi, Selatan Indonesia. Hal ini diperkatakan memperlihatkan ikatan intim antara unsur animisme dengan teka-teki. Walaupun secara tersurat ia mungkin tidak menampakkan hubungan teka-teki dengan unsur keagamaan. Namun yang jelas berkenaan hubungan teka-teki dengan unsur animisme ditunjukkan menerusi medium pemujaan semangat padi. Bagi masyarakat Kadazandusun di Sabah, teka-teki (sundait) mempunyai pantang larang tertentu yang jika dilanggar dipercayai akan menyebabkan hasil padi tidak menjadi. Umpamanya teka-teki tidak boleh dipertuturkan semasa membersihkan kawasan pertanian. Dalam masyarakat Toraja Timur, teka-teki adalah satu perbuatan sihir yang bermaksud jawapan yang tersimpan dalam teka-teki itu, sama dengan hasil padi yang tersimpan dalam benih. Andai jawapan yang dikemukakan itu “betul atau baik” adalah dipercayai bahawa hasil padi akan menjadi atau makin bertambah baik daripada musim sebelumnya. Dalam kalangan masyarakat Toraja Barat pula mengeluarkan jawapan teka-teki bererti mengeluarkan kekuatan sakti. Kekuatan sakti yang terlepas kerana menzahirkan jawapan teka-teki segera mengimbangi roh atau kuasa jahat yang akan keluar daripada mayat yang lazimnya bertujuan untuk merosakkan tanaman mereka. Justeru itu, dipercayai bahawa padi dan teka-teki amat berkait rapat dengan masyarakat Nusantara, melaluinya terbina suatu ikatan unik yang agak serius. Ikatan yang sebegini menjadikan kedudukan teka-teki bukan sebagai satu bentuk hiburan ringan tetapi sebagai sesuatu yang serius yang boleh menjana sumber ekonomi mereka. Biarpun hari ini peranan teka-teki lebih dikaitkan dengan hiburan pada waktu senggang dan tidak bersifat serius. Ringkasnya setiap bangsa di dunia ini mempunyai bentuk dan kondisi teka-teki yang bercukai suasana tempatan.

The Malay-language term for the indigenous minority peoples of Peninsular Malaysia, “Orang Asli”, covers at least 19 culturally and linguistically distinct subgroups. This volume is a comprehensive survey of current understandings of Malaysia’s Orang Asli communities (including contributions from scholars within the Orang Asli community), looking at language, archaeology, history, religion and issues of education, health and social change, as well as questions of land rights and control of resources. Until about 1960 most Orang Asli lived in small camps and villages in the coastal and interior forests, or in isolated rural areas, and made their living by various combinations of hunting, gathering, fishing, agriculture, and trading forest products. By the end of the century, logging, economic development projects such as oil palm plantations, and resettlement programmes have displaced many Orang Asli communities and disrupted long-established social and cultural practices. The chapters in the present volume show Orang Asli responses to the challenges posed by a rapidly changing world. The authors also highlight the importance of Orang Asli studies for the anthropological understanding of small-scale indigenous societies in general.
