Satyapal Anands poetry is cerebral rather than emotional. It reveals a many-splendored splash of color and sound. He is an imagist in the sense that his images appeal to all our senses, and we feel that what we read is a poem but what we see is a multidimensional picture. Satyapal Anand excels his fellow contemporary poets insofar as his symbolism is nearer to the collective unconscious mind of the race as a whole. In this mythology, classical literature and multiple dimensions of religious experience play a great part. This book has no fewer than seventy poems. There is no unrelieved romanticism, no unhealthy self-pity, no wallowing in the luxury of grief, but there is experience that gives rise to ideas and feelings and their healthy amalgam. Anands art consists in isolating a single experience as a unit shorn of its dross and outer embellishments and then subject it to a poetic inquiry. For example, two of his poems find photogenic correspondence between progenitive sex in human beings and in flora and fauna, one happening in the bedroom and the other in the garden outside. This privity of reproductive process in such a tender poetic expression is unmatched in poetry. An important package is of trans-creations, or creative translations, of the poets own work in other Eastern languages. Satyapal Anand uses poetic devices like alliteration, the parallelism of low tones and slow stroke, or rhymes that are enjambed to escape the suffocating atmosphere of close lines. However, the devices he uses show cerebration, cleverness, and control of the finest order.

I believe theres something in predictions of doom and destruction. The truth, indeed, may be just a grain of salt in such prophecies, but even that grain of salt is enough to make you feel uneasy about the future of mankind. We know of Nostradamus (15031566), who made many prophecies about the human race, which have come true. It is now known that the Italian National Library in Rome made an amazing discovery in May 2005. Buried in their archives was a hitherto-unknown manuscript by the prophet of doom that he had handed to his son and later was donated to Pope Urban VIII. It did not surface again until now, almost four hundred years later.

Mirza Ghalib, Indias most loved poet, lived at a time of great political and cultural transformation when the established order, the mighty Mughal Empire, was falling apart around midnineteenth century and the new regime spearheaded by the East India Company was not yet fully in place. There are multiple lenses that can be used to look at Ghalibs work. At the surface, he is a romantic poet par excellence. But if we dig deeper, Ghalib is much more than a romantic poet. He expressed ideas that came from conflicting philosophical traditions, namely the concept of shunyata (nonexistence) that is a core belief in Buddhist philosophy and the concept of Maya that is at the center of Vedantic philosophy. This book contains lyrical free verse English translation of 235 ghazals contained in Ghalibs Urdu Divan, popularly known as Divan-e Ghalib. One reason that makes the second revised and expanded edition of the book unique and extremely valuable is the addition of original Urdu text in an easy-to-read Romanized format. According to distinguished literary critic and leading Ghalib scholar Professor Gopi Chand Narang, Ghalib was never so close to the reader as he is now with this work. Surinder has succeeded in his creative transformation of Mirzas ghazals into poetic English where others have failed.
