In this paper we extend the well-known Boggs-Tolle-Wang characterization of Q-superlinear convergence for quasi-Newton methods for equality constrained optimization to quasi-Newton interior-point methods for nonlinear programming. Critical issues in this extension include, the choice of the centering parameter, the choice of the steplength parameter, and the determination of the primary variables.

Nonlinear Programming 2 written by O. L. Mangasarian and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-10 with Mathematics categories.

Nonlinear Programming 2 covers the proceedings of the Special Interest Group on Mathematical Programming Symposium conducted by the Computer Sciences Department at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, on April 15-17, 1974. This book is divided into 13 chapters and begins with a survey of the global and superlinear convergence of a class of algorithms obtained by imposing changing bounds on the variables of the problem. The succeeding chapters deal with the convergence of the well-known reduced gradient method under suitable conditions and a superlinearly convergent quasi-Newton method for unconstrained minimization. These topics are followed by discussion of a superlinearly convergent algorithm for linearly constrained optimization problems and the effective methods for constrained optimization, namely the method of augmented Lagrangians. Other chapters explore a method for handling minimization problems with discontinuous derivatives and the advantages of factorizations of updating for Jacobian-related matrices in minimization problems. The last chapters present the Newton-like methods for the solution of nonlinear equations and inequalities, along with the various aspects of integer programming. This book will prove useful to mathematicians and computer scientists.

This volume contains the edited texts of the lectures presented at the workshop on Nonlinear Optimization: Theory and Applications, held in Erice at the "G. Stampacchia" School of Mathematics of the "E. Majorana" International Centre for Scientific Culture June 13-21, 1995. The meeting was conceived to review and discuss recent advances and promising research trends concerning theory, algorithms, and innovative applications in the field This is a field of mathematics which is providing viable of Nonlinear Optimization. tools in engineering, in economics and in other applied sciences, and which is giving a great contribution also in the solution of the more practiced linear optimization prob lems. The meeting was attended by approximately 70 people from 18 countries. Besides the lectures, several formal and informal discussions took place. The result was a broad exposure providing a wide and deep understanding of the present research achievements in the field. We wish to express our appreciation for the active contributions of all the partici pants in the meeting. Our gratitude is due to the Ettore Majorana Center in Erice, which offered its facilities and stimulating environment: its staff was certainly instrumental for the success of the meeting. Our gratitude is also due to Francisco Facchinei and Massino Roma for the time spent in the organization of the workshop, and to Giuliana Cai for the careful typesetting of this volume.

This book presents comprehensive state-of-the-art theoretical analysis of the fundamental Newtonian and Newtonian-related approaches to solving optimization and variational problems. A central focus is the relationship between the basic Newton scheme for a given problem and algorithms that also enjoy fast local convergence. The authors develop general perturbed Newtonian frameworks that preserve fast convergence and consider specific algorithms as particular cases within those frameworks, i.e., as perturbations of the associated basic Newton iterations. This approach yields a set of tools for the unified treatment of various algorithms, including some not of the Newton type per se. Among the new subjects addressed is the class of degenerate problems. In particular, the phenomenon of attraction of Newton iterates to critical Lagrange multipliers and its consequences as well as stabilized Newton methods for variational problems and stabilized sequential quadratic programming for optimization. This volume will be useful to researchers and graduate students in the fields of optimization and variational analysis.

Abstract: "In this thesis, we examine nonlinear programming from the standpoint of nonlinear equations. We consider Newton and quasi-Newton algorithms for solving underdetermined nonlinear systems and then show how these techniques can be applied in the setting of constrained optimization. We produce new perturbation analyses for the special symmetric block system resulting from a standard solution method in nonlinear programming. Using the steepest descent method for unconstrained optimization, we develop a new iteration for the constrained case. We give a convergence analysis for this new method and illustrate its behavior with numerical examples. Finally, we propose a new class of symmetric updates for use in a quasi-Newton method for nonlinear programming. We show how these updates model the underlying nonlinear equation better than the standard symmetric updates and also how they require less overall work for large problems."
