The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. This book provides an update on the phylogeny, systematics and ecology of horses in South America based on data provided over the past three decades. The contemporary South American mammalian communities were shaped by the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama and by the profound climatic oscillations during the Pleistocene. Horses were a conspicuous group of immigrant mammals from North America that arrived in South America during the Pleistocene. This group is represented by 2 genera, Hippidion and Equus, which include small species (Hippidion devillei, H. saldiasi, E. andium and E. insulatus) and large forms (Equus neogeus and H. principale). Both groups arrived in South America via 2 different routes. One model designed to explain this migration indicates that the small forms used the Andes corridor, while larger horses used the eastern route and arrived through some coastal areas. Molecular dating (ancient DNA) suggests that the South American horses separated from the North American taxa (caballines and the New World stilt-legged horse) after 3.6 - 3.2 Ma, consistent with the final formation of the Panamanian Isthmus. Recent studies of stable isotopes in these horses indicate an extensive range of 13C values cover closed woodlands to C4 grasslands. This plasticity agrees with the hypothesis that generalist species and open biome specialist species from North America indicate a positive migration through South America.

A obra que o leitor tem diante de si é um convite ao olhar minucioso para o contemporâneo na literatura brasileira. Mais do que uma mera especificidade temporal, precisamos, para dialogar com Giorgio Agamben, pensar sobre o que é o contemporâneo. Em primeiro lugar, para chegarmos ao que há de atual, ou melhor, para entendermos o que é esse atual, é necessário fazer coro à pergunta: “O que significa ser contemporâneo?”. Agamben parte das “Considerações intempestivas” de Nietzsche — sobre a qual Roland Barthes assevera que “o contemporâneo é o intempestivo”, conforme cita o filósofo italiano —, e assinala que não há uma perfeita adequação entre o contemporâneo e o seu próprio tempo. É justamente por essa desconexão, essa inatualidade, que o contemporâneo pode perceber e apreender sua época: “A contemporaneidade, portanto, é uma singular relação com o próprio tempo, que adere a este e, ao mesmo tempo, dele toma distâncias; mais precisamente, essa é a relação com o tempo que a este adere através de uma dissociação e um anacronismo”. O dilema do contemporâneo, desse modo, passa pela dimensão do olhar: “Aqueles que coincidem muito plenamente com a época, que em todos os aspectos a esta aderem perfeitamente, não são contemporâneos porque, exatamente por isso, não conseguem vê-la, não podem manter fixo o olhar sobre ela”. Nesses termos, não basta entender o contemporâneo como aquilo que se localiza no presente. Isso quer dizer que não tomaremos a literatura como uma representação do que é atual, mas como aquilo que “mantém fixo o olhar no seu próprio tempo, para nele perceber não as luzes, mas o escuro”, desviando-se dos fachos de luz de sua época para enxergar as sombras. Sendo assim, o escritor contemporâneo se localiza no escuro do presente, com relação ao qual ele é anacrônico – e nesse presente, que não é meramente cronológico, cria-se uma relação simultânea com passado e futuro (nos termos de Agamben, um “muito cedo” que é, ao mesmo tempo, um “muito tarde”). Nota-se, então, que seu compromisso “é, no tempo cronológico, algo que urge dentro deste e que o transforma” (AGAMBEN, 2009, p. 65). No panorama de Karl Erik Schøllhammer sobre a ficção brasileira, “o escritor contemporâneo parece estar motivado por uma grande urgência em se relacionar com a realidade histórica, estando consciente, entretanto, da impossibilidade de captá-la na sua especificidade atual, em seu presente”. Se olhamos o contemporâneo, também podemos dizer que o contemporâneo nos olha, na perspectiva que Lacan dá a esse movimento do olhar em seu Seminário 11. Neste livro há o autor que olha, há o pesquisador que olha, há o leitor que olha. Todos nós, em posições distintas, capturando um fragmento de luz ou de trevas do contemporâneo, na medida em que essa emissão luminosa só pode ser como descontinuidade, como abertura e fechamento de uma fresta através da qual se vê por intermédio de um vidro embaçado, nunca nítido, límpido, real. No entendimento de Benjamin, só podemos ver ruínas, como o Angelus Novus de Klee. Temos, então, por um breve instante, nessa trama de olhares, uma notícia do presente – e do passado que se manifesta nesse presente como memória (impedida, silenciada, manipulada, nas modalidades de esquecimento segundo Paul Ricoeur) e como repetição (sintomática, individual e coletiva). Os olhares críticos aqui se multiplicam – os de Belchior (no limite da relação entre letra de música e literatura), Bernardo Kucinski, Chico Buarque, Conceição Evaristo, José Castello, Luciana Hidalgo, Lygia Fagundes Telles, Michel Laub, Nélida Piñon e Noemi Jaffe são interceptados pelos de pesquisadores e discentes do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo e da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo e entrecruzados com um número potencial de leituras e de leitores.
