For vulnerable older, disabled, or homeless people who need accommodation and support, a variety of different services have been developed, from hostels and group homes to extra-care housing and retirement villages. But do these settings effectively improve the well-being of those who live in them? This book explores the rationale behind these accommodations and the impact different forms of accommodation policy and practice have on the lives of vulnerable people, arguing for a flexible policy approach that places people in control of their own lives. Applying an original evaluation framework to case studies in the United Kingdom and Sweden--two countries with long and differing service histories--Accommodating Difference raises important questions, making it a valuable resource for supported housing practitioners and policy makers, as well as for students of urban studies, planning, and health and social care.

Supported Housing written by Yoric Irving-Clarke and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-05 with Philosophy categories.

This book covers the history of supported housing provision in the context of the broader political and theoretical considerations of the time in which the respective policies were being implemented. The book takes an historical perspective using path dependency as an analytical framework. Particular attention is paid to the critical junctures in the path of supported housing provision and how these limited and continue to limit the policy choices available. The book concludes with a look at the current state of supported housing policy with a view to making recommendations for how policy in this area could be carried forward. The hope is that readers of this book learn the lessons of previous policy initiatives in this area and, by looking at the philosophical underpinning for supported housing can make recommendations for how it can be funded and provided in the future. This book provides a valuable resource for scholars and practitioners seeking to both provide and influence policy in this area. It is also a useful source for students studying housing and urban policy.

Chronic homelessness is a highly complex social problem of national importance. The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Support for living? provides a critical analysis of the impact the Supporting People programme has had on housing and support for people with learning disabilities. It explores not only outcomes for service users, but also the implications of these for provider organisations and commissioners of social care. The report demonstrates how local definitions of 'housing related support' have resulted in unequal provision of services across the country and identifies a range of frameworks for delivering housing and support, and demonstrates how these relate to differing outcomes for services users. It evaluates "5-year Supporting People" strategies from across England and questions whether the principles of supported living have in some cases been diluted in the rush to access a new source of funding, as well as providing 'best practice checklists' for various aspects of the delivery of high quality supported housing.Essential reading for managers and commissioners of learning disability services and members of Supporting People teams, the report will also be of value to anyone interested in supported housing or services for vulnerable adults.
