Student wellbeing is foundational to academic success. One recent survey of postsecondary educators found that nearly 80 percent believed emotional wellbeing is a "very" or "extremely" important factor in student success. Studies have found the dropout rates for students with a diagnosed mental health problem range from 43 percent to as high as 86 percent. While dealing with stress is a normal part of life, for some students, stress can adversely affect their physical, emotional, and psychological health, particularly given that adolescence and early adulthood are when most mental illnesses are first manifested. In addition to students who may develop mental health challenges during their time in postsecondary education, many students arrive on campus with a mental health problem or having experienced significant trauma in their lives, which can also negatively affect physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing. The nation's institutions of higher education are seeing increasing levels of mental illness, substance use and other forms of emotional distress among their students. Some of the problematic trends have been ongoing for decades. Some have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting economic consequences. Some are the result of long-festering systemic racism in almost every sphere of American life that are becoming more widely acknowledged throughout society and must, at last, be addressed. Mental Health, Substance Use, and Wellbeing in Higher Education lays out a variety of possible strategies and approaches to meet increasing demand for mental health and substance use services, based on the available evidence on the nature of the issues and what works in various situations. The recommendations of this report will support the delivery of mental health and wellness services by the nation's institutions of higher education.

This book illuminates international voices of those who feel empowered to do things differently in higher education, providing inspiration to those who are seeking guidance, reassurance, or a beacon of hope. Doing things differently comes with an awareness and curiosity to explore what can be. Increasingly, more and more professionals in higher education are choosing themselves, happiness, families, relationships, kindness, and compassion over arbitrary notions of institutional prestige, continuous pressure to overwork, and competitiveness with others. The chapters in this book do more than highlight flaws in the system, they call for proactive engagement in interrupting and reimagining what is broken. The authors share their own experiences as a way of encouraging readers to take small steps towards self-care, to notice their surroundings, and to embrace change as an empowering tool. The focus is on becoming the change we aspire to see, with a collective readiness to instigate positive transformations. Sharing ambitious ideas to encourage change, this book is a valuable resource for those seeking to enhance their self-care and wellbeing in the higher education context, and for those seeking to engage with others in support of these efforts.

This book provides an evidence-based approach to sustainable self-care, anchoring these strategies in individual academic workers’ core personal values. It teaches readers how to use their values to leverage self-care strategies into a workable, individualized, and effective map to wellness. Working in the demanding environment of higher education can leave little time for self-care, yet making space for wellness and self-care is essential to creating a creative and innovative environment for academic work. This book shows how to create and successfully implement realistic self-care plans. By identifying core values and using these to develop individualized self-care plans, Sustaining Your Well-Being in Higher Education pushes back against a one-size-fits-all approach while also discussing the role of self-care in academic labor activism and providing strategies for readers to become advocates for better self-care practices within their zones of influence. Designed to provide academic workers with the skills they need to develop workable and sustainable self-care plans, this book is an invaluable resource for students and professionals working in all areas of higher education.

This open access book is a thorough update and expansion of the 2017 edition of The Handbook of Salutogenesis, responding to the rapidly growing salutogenesis research and application arena. Revised and updated from the first edition are background and historical chapters that trace the development of the salutogenic model of health and flesh out the central concepts, most notably generalized resistance resources and the sense of coherence that differentiate salutogenesis from pathogenesis. From there, experts describe a range of real-world applications within and outside health contexts. Many new chapters emphasize intervention research findings. Readers will find numerous practical examples of how to implement salutogenesis to enhance the health and well-being of families, infants and young children, adolescents, unemployed young people, pre-retirement adults, and older people. A dedicated section addresses how salutogenesis helps tackle vulnerability, with chapters on at-risk children, migrants, prisoners, emergency workers, and disaster-stricken communities. Wide-ranging coverage includes new topics beyond health, like intergroup conflict, politics and policy-making, and architecture. The book also focuses on applying salutogenesis in birth and neonatal care clinics, hospitals and primary care, schools and universities, workplaces, and towns and cities. A special section focuses on developments in salutogenesis methods and theory. With its comprehensive coverage, The Handbook of Salutogenesis, 2nd Edition, is the standard reference for researchers, practitioners, and health policy-makers who wish to have a thorough grounding in the topic. It is also written to support post-graduate education courses and self-study in public health, nursing, psychology, medicine, and social sciences.

Amid global challenges like climate change, systemic racism, and the COVID-19 pandemic, the complexity of higher education’s role in addressing human health and well-being is evident. Health Promoting Universities explores how post-secondary education can address interconnected well-being challenges through collaborative leadership at organizational, provincial/state, national, and international levels. Written by health promoting university leaders from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, this collection reflects on research findings and emergent insights in taking a systems and settings approach to promote health and well-being. The authors advocate for prioritizing authentic, collaborative, and altruistic leadership to secure the systemic change necessary to sustain and promote the health of the planet and its citizens. The book examines systems-wide health promotion within post-secondary campuses, emphasizing higher education’s role as an incubator to design and implement community-led processes and leadership strategies to enhance well-being. By engaging in knowledge mobilization practices that include the community and beyond, the book invites leaders, practitioners, and researchers to use these approaches to lead well-being efforts beyond the physical boundaries of their campuses. Drawing on the collective knowledge of the authors in leading health promotion on campuses and beyond, Health Promoting Universities ultimately seeks to answer the question, How can higher education improve people’s well-being, create healthy campus communities, and ensure a healthy planet?

The volume also explores challenges that have arisen as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic which has forced higher education practitioners to reconceptualise pedagogy. Over the last 20 years, changes in higher education have stimulated research on academic working life. Indeed, the application of a market-oriented system and new public management policies in higher education have increased the emphasis on internationalization, accountability and management of academic work. These changes have increased the complexity of the academic work profile, which is characterized by teaching, research and institutional demands, including public engagement to strengthen the interaction between university, industry and society. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced far-reaching challenges that have further increased the psychosocial work demands. Universities continue to face continuous and rapid changes that have led to increased levels of work-related stress for both teaching and research academic staff (TRAS) and technical and administrative staff (TAS). This scenario has also had a negative impact on the academic life and well-being of university students.
