Si le mal est ce qui doit ne pas être, il place la métaphysique devant une alternative : prétendre saisir la rationalité du réel malgré le mal, ou prendre au sérieux l’exigence de penser le monde depuis le mal. La première attitude, caractéristique de ce que la tradition nomme la théodicée, est selon Kant une illusion, dont la déconstruction ne laisse ouvert que le second chemin. Le suivre suppose de s’intéresser à la question du mensonge, que le philosophe présente comme un mal en toutes circonstances. Kant produit ici l’une des rares légitimations philosophiques de la plainte, en même temps qu’il s’efforce à déterminer précisément ce que mentir veut dire. Cette nouvelle traduction est l’occasion de revenir sur la célèbre controverse entre Kant et Constant qui pourrait bien être en partie le résultat d’un coup monté.
