This thesis introduces surf therapy as an adjunct treatment modality for trauma and addiction, which can be used in collaboration with existing twelve-step and cognitive behavioral therapy models. Focusing on the mind-body split that occurs in response to relational trauma and addiction, this thesis offers a three-component clinical approach to healing that includes: mindfulness-based interpersonal skills groups, surfing groups, and process groups. The surf therapy model developed by the author views the person as a holistic system, thus incorporating a creative and holistic approach toward healing the psyche and facilitating embodiment. Using a phenomenological methodological approach, this thesis explores the psychosomatic wounds of trauma and addiction in an archetypal framework, while also considering Jungian, attachment, and somatic-based theories and associated neuroscience as they relate to surfing as a healing modality.

Recent studies (Cavanaugh & Rademacher, 2014; Clapham et al., 2014; 2015; Stuhl & Porter, 2015) indicate that surfing can be an effective therapy for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The type of aerobic fitness associated with regular surfing may also promote brain development and cognitive function (Khan & Hillman, 2014; Segalowitz, 2016). Brown et al. (2012) suggest the need for community programs that focus on recreational activities to promote friendship development for children with ASD. Considering the studies showing a demand for social supports (Siklos & Kerns, 2006) and the limited access to social and recreational activities for school-aged children with ASD (Brown et al., 2012), the researcher has attempted to create a surf therapy program designed to teach social skills to children who have ASD. The included lesson plan sequence incorporates social development activities into a training program geared to develop the paddling and balancing skills associated with surfing. Throughout the program, students will learn about water safety, surf culture, surf history, paddling and surfing techniques, and worldwide surf destinations. The main intent of this program is to promote the availability of surf-focused recreational therapy programs (RTPs) for children with ASD by discussing the indicated social skills benefits that such therapies may have. The attached program is intended to provide children who have ASD with an opportunity to practice important social skills while learning about the various dynamics of surfing. Keywords: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Recreational Therapy Program (RTP), Social Skills, Surf Therapy.

“Stand up, up, UP!” is the mantra of Surfers for Autism, an organization that runs surf events for children with autism, providing the opportunity to not only catch waves, but to become part of a supportive surfing community. It is also a message to all those struggling with autism: a message to stand up, no matter how hard it gets. Waves of Healing collects the stories of a group of everyday families who discovered Surfers for Autism in their search for hope, answers, and healing for their children with autism. These are stories about the struggles children with autism face—the struggle to stand on a surfboard, the struggle to communicate, the struggle to make progress in a world which accepts “normal” and rejects all else. But they’re also stories of breakthroughs, of authentic joy and unbridled excitement as they learn to see their world from a whole new perspective—standing tall atop a surfboard, riding a wave all their own. Exploring new avenues of therapy for those with autism, with therapeutic and extraordinary results, Waves of Healing is a snapshot of hope, courage, and human perseverance.

Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) typically exhibit low levels of self-determination and quality of life (Wehmeyer & Shogren, 2017; Heijst & Geurts, 2014). Such deficits are associated with lower rates of employment and independent living as well as an increased risk for depressive and anxiety related disorders (Leyfer et al, 2006). Purpose: The purpose of this mixed methods study was to evaluate the effects of surf therapy on self-determination and quality of life and to capture the meaning and value that young adults with ASD ascribe to their experience. Methods: Fifteen participants (age 18-26) enrolled in a surf therapy program participated in this study. The Arc's Self-Determination Scale and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Field Scale were used to collect measurements before, immediately following, and six weeks following the program. Additionally, qualitative data were collected via photovoice, a participant-centered research methodology that uses picture-taking as an alternative form of communication and self-expression. Participants took part in a focus group following the program during which they discussed their photographs that most accurately reflected their experience of surf therapy and how it impacted their lives. Quantitative and qualitative data were merged during the interpretation of the results using a convergent triangulation design. Data Analysis: A paired samples t-test was conducted to compare the measurements (pre/post/retention) of self-determination and quality of life. Qualitative data were collected through artifacts (photographs) and as verbatim transcript which was analyzed using a generic coding process. Results: Statistically significant improvements were found for both self-determination (pre-post: p

An exploration of water's power to heal us, inspire us and offer us spiritual meaning. This is a feminist reimagining of the meaning of power through the lens of water. Easkey offers a range of wellness practices to encourage the reader to connect with water as healer, restoring a relationship of care. Our strength lies in being soft like water. This book is about the power we gain by connecting to water. It’s about how we can restore our relationship with the world's different bodies of water, and by doing so, restore both the water and ourselves. By sharing Easkey's own experiences as surfer and marine scientist, as well as those of many of her mentors who are at the forefront of water protection and activism around the world, it guides readers into reimagining the spirituality of water and restoring our innate connection with this lifeblood of the planet. The book also provides the reader with water-inspired strategies to restore calm, reduce stress and soothe anxiety. These range from simple breathing and visualization exercises to undertaking a journey from a water source to the ocean in order to forge a deep connection with the water. The emphasis is as much on the benefit to water as it is to the individual, and on creating a culture of reciprocity and care. By regaining this lost connection with water, we learn to develop an empathic connection with the force of all life and in the process restore our own hearts and minds.
