The surface modification of biomaterials plays a significant role in determining the outcome of biological-material interactions. With the appropriate modification a material’s surface can be tailored to improve biocompatibility, adhesion and cell interactions. Consequently surface modification is vital in the development and design of new biomaterials and medical devices. Surface modification of biomaterials reviews both established surface modifications and those still in the early stages of research and discusses how they can be used to optimise biological interactions and enhance clinical performance.Part one begins with chapters looking at various types and techniques of surface modification including plasma polymerisation, covalent binding of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG), heparinisation, peptide functionalisation and calcium phosphate deposition before going on to examine metal surface oxidation and biomaterial surface topography to control cellular response with particular reference to technologies, cell behaviour and biomedical applications. Part two studies the analytical techniques and applications of surface modification with chapters on analysing biomaterial surface chemistry, surface structure, morphology and topography before moving onto discuss modifying biomaterial surfaces to optimise interactions with blood, control infection, optimise interactions with soft tissues, repair and regenerate nerve cells, control stem cell growth and differentiation and to optimise interactions with bone. The distinguished editor and international team of contributors to Surface modification of biomaterials have produced a unique overview and detailed chapters on a range of surface modification techniques which will provide an excellent resource for biomaterials researchers and scientists and engineers concerned with improving the properties of biomaterials. It will also be beneficial for academics researching surface modification. Reviews both established surface modifications and those still in the early stages of research and how they can be used to optimise biological interactions and enhance clinical performance Studies analytical techniques and applications of surface modification with chapters assessing biomaterial surface chemistry, surface structure, morphology and topography Discusses modifying biomaterial surfaces to optimise interactions with blood and soft tissues and also to repair and regenerate nerve cells and control infection

The principal motivation behind surface engineering and modification for improved biocompatibility of a biomaterial is to control interactions of the biomaterial with components of living systems or subsets thereof in a manner that mimics the normal physiological state or produces a desired change in biological state. This pursuit of biomimicry is discussed in this chapter within the context of the core mechanisms of the biological response to materials. A tutorial on surfaces, interfaces, and interphases leads to the identification of specific targets for surface engineering and modification. These targets include water wettability (surface energy), surface chemistry, surface chemical patterns and surface textures, and surface presentation of biomimetic motifs. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the essential conceptual tools required for building a biomaterials surface science laboratory, illustrated with an example of modifying surfaces for improved cardiovascular biomaterials.

Applications of synthetic materials in medicine date back over 4000 year2. The Egyptians used linen as sutures. In the Roman Empire, gold was used in dentistry. Perhaps even earlier, ivory and bone may have been used in the body by practitioners of the healing arts. The historical origins of modem biomaterials science are also hard to precisely trace, but many of the ideas that define biomaterials as we know them today evolved in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Surface modification technology has played a prominent role in biomaterials science, and has paralleled the evolution of the modem field. In a symposium organized by the Artifical Heart Program of the NIH National Heart Institute and the Artificial Kidney program of the NIH National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1968, there were already a number of presentations on surface modification. Surface characterization at that time included scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, contact angle methods, and infrared internal reflection methods.

Biomaterials And Surface Modification written by Paul K. Chu and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-01-01 with Biomedical materials categories.

Biomaterials are used in the biomedical industry to replace or repair injured and non-functional tissues. The research on the biomaterials has also become a hot topic in the new century. The worldwide biomaterials market was over US$300 billion in 2005 and is projected to grow at a rate of 20% per year. Consequently, a growing number of scientists and engineers are engaged in biomaterials fabrication and research. Recognizing the ever increasing importance of biomaterials, a number of books on biomaterials have appeared in the past 20 years. This review book Biomaterials and Surface Modification is different from these published books in that it brings together the review on the biomaterials including ceramics, metals and polymers, and some surface modification technologies of biomaterials. Besides the bulk properties of biomaterials such as non-toxicity, corrosion resistance or controlled degradability, modulus of elasticity, and fatigue strength, the material surface plays an extremely important role in the response of the biological environment to the artificial medical devices. Therefore, surface modification of biomaterials is also a very key factor to improve their biological, physical and chemical properties. The book contains 8 chapters on bioceramics, magnesium alloys applied to biomaterials, bioactive bone cement for orthopedic applications, nano-biomaterials and polymer/ceramic composites, diamond-like carbon biomaterials, energetic plasma treatment of metallic implants, plasma-sprayed bioactive CaO-SiO2 based ceramic coatings, surface, and plasma treatment of polymeric biomaterials. These chapters were written by renowned experts in the respective fields and this book is valuable to the biomaterials and biomedical engineering community. The review is intended for a broad and diverse readership including bioengineers, materials scientists, physicians, surgeons, research students, practitioners, and researchers in materials science, bioengineering, and medicine. Readers will be able to familiarize themselves with the latest biomaterials and surface modification techniques. In addition, each chapter is accompanied by an extensive list of references if readers are interested in pursuing further. The outstanding cooperation from contributing authors who devoted their valuable time and efforts to write these excellent chapters for this review is highly appreciated. We are also indebted to all the colleagues who have made this book a reality.

This book contains selected contributions on surface modification to improve the properties of solid materials. The surface properties are tailored either by functionalization, etching, or deposition of a thin coating. Functionalization is achieved by a brief treatment with non-equilibrium gaseous plasma containing suitable radicals that interact chemically with the material surface and thus enable the formation of rather stable functional groups. Etching is performed in order to modify the surface morphology. The etching parameters are selected in such a way that a rich morphology of the surfaces is achieved spontaneously on the sub-micrometer scale, without using masks. The combination of adequate surface morphology and functionalization of materials leads to superior surface properties which are particularly beneficial for the desired response upon incubation with biological matter. Alternatively, the materials are coated with a suitable thin film that is useful in various applications from food to aerospace industries.
