Comprehensive resource covering the latest development of surface engineering inspired by nature with a special focus on wetting control Drawing from the natural abilities of plants and animals around the world, Controlled Surface Wetting takes a deep dive into wetting-controlled systems of biological surfaces with information on mechanisms, theory, surface design, fabrication, and effects. This book guides readers to design better engineering surfaces for applications in self-cleaning, water harvesting and repellency, anti-icing, liquid-transport, and beyond. Exploring the latest literature, this book introduces bioinspired techniques and methods to design wetting-controlled surfaces by using organic or inorganic materials, including those with high/low surface energy, regular/irregular, ordered/disordered, or rough/smooth surfaces, or endless arrangements and combinations of micro- and nanostructures of various styles. This book begins by introducing biological surfaces such as plant leaves and duck feathers, butterfly wings, and spider silks, as well as their functions, including superhydrophobic properties, water repellency, and capturing tiny water droplets, respectively, progressing through to more advanced topics such as dually-mobile super-repellency, multi-liquid repellency, and switchable repellency in both air and liquid. Controlled Surface Wetting includes discussion on: Fundamental wetting theories, extension and theoretical models, wetting dynamics and kinetics, physics of wetting, wetting adhesion, and wetting chemistry Static and dynamic gradients, texture gradients such as gradient polymers, wedge- and helical-induced gradients, and synergism of multi-gradients Formation, control, and instability of Rayleigh instability, microfluidics, fluid-coating, electrospinning, fluid diffusion, and laser techniques Coalesced-droplet vertical transport, the hierarchical droplet size-effect, atmospheric water harvesting, and energy harvesting Artificial skins and sensors, including artificial skin vision, and medical applications, including directional-controllable drug delivery Controlled Surface Wetting is an up-to-date and completely comprehensive resource for students and researchers in chemistry, physics, and materials science seeking to learn about the design of smart and advanced materials for engineering applications.

Superhydrophobic surfaces, artificially mimicking lotus leaves, have captured the attention of scientists and engineers over the past few decades. Recent trends have shifted from superhydrophobicity to superominipohobicity, or superamphiphobicity. In addition, dynamic rather than static surface wetting/dewetting properties, which can be triggered by various stimuli, including temperature, pH, magnetic/electric fields, solvents, light exposure etc, have been highly sought after for commercial applications. This book will focus on recent topics related to various stimuli-responsive wetting/dewetting surfaces, and give an overview of the knowledge and concepts of how to design and establish these smart artificial surfaces, which can be used for technical developments in a wide variety research fields.

The Effect Of Surface Wettability On The Defrost Process written by Yang Liu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-26 with Science categories.

This SpringerBrief presents a recent advancement in modeling and measurement of the effect of surface wettability on the defrost process. Carefully controlled laboratory measurements of the defrosting of cooled surfaces are used to reveal the effect of surface wetting properties on the extent and speed of frost removal by melting or slumping. The experiments are accompanied by visualization of frost removal at several defrosting conditions. Analysis breaks the defrost process into three stages according to the behavior of the meltwater. Surface wetting factors are included, and become significant when sufficient meltwater accumulates between the saturated frost layer and the surface. The book is aimed at researchers, practicing engineers and graduate students.

The Surface Wettability Effect On Phase Change written by Marco Marengo and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-10-30 with Science categories.

The Surface Wettability Effect on Phase Change collects high level contributions from internationally recognised scientists in the field. It thoroughly explores surface wettability, with topics spanning from the physics of phase change, physics of nucleation, mesoscale modeling, analysis of phenomena such drop evaporation, boiling, local heat flux at triple line, Leidenfrost, dropwise condensation, heat transfer enhancement, freezing, icing. All the topics are treated by discussing experimental results, mathematical modeling and numerical simulations. In particular, the numerical methods look at direct numerical simulations in the framework of VOF simulations, phase-field simulations and molecular dynamics. An introduction to equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics of phase change, wetting phenomena, liquid interfaces, numerical simulation of wetting phenomena and phase change is offered for readers who are less familiar in the field. This book will be of interest to researchers, academics, engineers, and postgraduate students working in the area of thermofluids, thermal management, and surface technology.

"This is the book I have been waiting for! Written by experts in each field, this encyclopedia provides a wealth of information not only about the tidepool and shore life but also the oceanography associated with these habitats. This will be a major reference guide for years to come."—Dr. Nigella Hillgarth, Executive Director, Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Scripps Institution of Oceanography "The Encyclopedia of Tidepools and Rocky Shores covers much more than one might guess. It ranges from oceanography, to physiology, biomechanics, and conservation science, along with the expected treatment of the diverse groups of organisms that live in those habitats. The coverage of each topic is kept short and comprehensible to almost everyone, from high schools to colleges, and certainly to the general public interested in learning more about this fascinating part of our natural world. Best of all, the editors have managed to get some of the best scientists in the world, the absolute experts in their fields, to write the articles. The relatively short length of each entry also makes this book an ideal source for assigned readings to accompany marine biology, ecology, or oceanography classes, laboratories and field trips. It will be much appreciated by teachers and students."—Ken Sebens, Director of the Friday Harbor Marine Laboratories, University of Washington "The place where vast oceans meet the land is wondrous, complex and fascinating. Visitors from research scientists to toddlers have explored these ecosystems—one of nature's most popular theme parks. Anyone who has spent time amongst the sea stars, crabs and kelp departs full of unanswered questions. Now these questions can be answered by dipping into the Encyclopedia of Tidepools and Rocky Shores. The editors and contributors to this reference have created a new standard that will be an immediate classic."—Leon Panetta, Director, The Leon & Sylvia Panetta Institute for Public Policy "This volume is a wonderful introduction to the hidden and fascinating world of rocky tidepools. Grab a copy and head out with your kids or students for an outdoor experience that's sure to get them hooked. From remarkable adaptations of marine algae to weird animal life histories, tidepools hold amazing stories to tell. They deserve our interest—and our care—as part of earth's natural systems that sustain us all."—Julie Packard, Executive Director, Monterey Bay Aquarium "Tide pool lovers the world around will satisfy their curiosity, uncover new gems of insight and renew their wonder of nature at lands' end in this authoritative, fascinating and insightful compilation. Revealed within are the secrets of rocky shores and tide pools—that most dynamic of interfaces between the land and the sea, that treasure chest of rich biodiversity and keen insight, that world where science, literature, beauty and stewardship combine to form the now that integrates the past and tempts the future."—Jane Lubchenco, Oregon State University
