This collection of papers arose from the Proceedings of the International Workshop on Interfaces of Ceramic Materials held in Australia, 1993 and is a continuation of the previous book published under the same title. The objective of the Workshop was to discuss research progress on the chemistry of ceramic interfaces and related industrial aspects. Due to the multidisciplinary character of ceramic interfaces the book contains articles covering several areas of expertise, including ceramics, surface science, solid state electrochemistry, metallurgy and high temperature chemistry. Some technical papers are also included in this volume. Scientists and engineers working in these areas, as well as students in materials science and engineering, will find this book of particular significance.

The 17th University Conference on Ceramics, which also was the 7th LBL/MMRD International Materials Symposium, was held on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley from July 28 to August 1, 1980. It was devoted to the subject of surfaces and interfaces in ceramic and ceramic-metal systems. The program was timely and of great interest, as indicated by the large number of contributed papers, which included contributions from ten foreign countries. These proceedings are divided into the following categories dealing with the chemistry and physics of interfaces: calculations of interface/surface states, characterization of surfaces and inter faces, thermodynamics of interfaces, influence of surface and inter faces on selected ceramic processes, grain boundary structures, effects of grain boundaries on deformation and fracture, interfacial phenomena, formation of interfaces, development of adhesion, and reactions at interfaces. A number of papers deal specifically with the Si-Si02 interface, which probably has received more attention than any other because of its importance in the electronics industry. This coverage fulfills the principal objective of the symposium which was to explore and assess the current fundamental understand ing of interfaces and surfaces. A parallel objective of the symposium was fulfilled by a group of papers dealing with the correlation of interfacial characteris tics with mechanical behavior. This group includes papers dealing with the adherence of dissimilar materials at interfaces.

Ceramic Materials: Science and Engineering is an up-to-date treatment of ceramic science, engineering, and applications in a single, integrated text. Building on a foundation of crystal structures, phase equilibria, defects and the mechanical properties of ceramic materials, students are shown how these materials are processed for a broad diversity of applications in today's society. Concepts such as how and why ions move, how ceramics interact with light and magnetic fields, and how they respond to temperature changes are discussed in the context of their applications. References to the art and history of ceramics are included throughout the text. The text concludes with discussions of ceramics in biology and medicine, ceramics as gemstones and the role of ceramics in the interplay between industry and the environment. Extensively illustrated, the text also includes questions for the student and recommendations for additional reading. KEY FEATURES: Combines the treatment of bioceramics, furnaces, glass, optics, pores, gemstones, and point defects in a single text Provides abundant examples and illustrations relating theory to practical applications Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate teaching and as a reference for researchers in materials science Written by established and successful teachers and authors with experience in both research and industry

Ceramics are, in a general definition, materials that consist of man-made, inorganic, non-metallic solid material - either existing in a crystalline state or non-crystalline state (i.e., glasses). Materials characterization techniques are used to ensure the structural and surface integrity of ceramics for their use in a wide variety of applications, from thermal resistance to advanced electronic and optical technologies like fiber optics to structural uses. This book presents those techniques along with views on future trends in ceramics processing and advanced characterization technologies particularly appropriate to ceramics materials. Readers will find more on: Ceramic Materials preparation routes, including powder preparation by solution techniques and gas-phase techniques Formation techniques for ceramic films and coatings, thick films and bulk ceramics A review of ceramic microstructure, reactions, phase behavior, mechanical properties and electronic and magnetic ceramics

Nanostructured Materials: Physicochemical Chemistry Fundamentals for Energy and Environmental Applications summarizes research knowledge and helps advanced students, researchers and industrial technicians understand specific applications of nanomaterials in energy and the environment. Sections bring a strong foundational focus on the physicochemical basis of nanomaterials for these applications, the basic theory and physicochemical basis of nanomaterials, an energy and environment applications examination of typical cases, and progress. This book will appeal to researchers in the chemical sciences (inorganic and physical chemistry, coordination chemistry, molecular dynamics, electrochemistry, photocatalysis, thermocatalysis, thermodynamics, etc.), nanoscience (graphene, carbon nanotubes, nanocrystals, nano catalysis, energy, and environment-nano science), and more. Efficient use of energy, eco-friendly environmental systems, and technologies play an important role in global sustainable development. Multifunctional nanocomposites have excellent properties and can meet the practical needs of energy development and environmental treatment. They have been gradually applied in chemical materials, energy preparation, pollution control and other fields and have achieved impressive development. Provides a unified overview of a large variety of different applications on the design and synthesis of nanomaterials with potential applications in various conventional and new energy and environmental technologies Provides a strong foundational focus on the analysis of the structure of nanomaterials, the basic principles of design (nanomaterial structure-activity relationship), and the theoretical basis of physical chemistry (theoretical basis of nanomaterial design and applications) Meets a need to summarize and examine ongoing research and advances in a rapidly developing field
