This collection of essays—the first major account of surrealism in Latin America that covers both literary and visual production—explores the role the movement played in the construction and recuperation of cultural identities and the ways artists and writers contested, embraced, and adapted surrealist ideas and practices. Surrealism in Latin America provides new Latin American–centric scholarship, not only about surrealism’s impact on the region but also about the region’s impact on surrealism. It reconsiders the relation between art and anthropology, casts new light on the aesthetics of “primitivism,” and makes a strong case for Latin American artists and writers as the inheritors of a movement that effectively went underground after World War II. In so doing, it expands our understanding of important, fascinating figures who are less well known than their counterparts active in Europe and New York. Deriving from a conference held at the Getty Research Institute, the book is rich in new materials drawn from the GRI’s diverse Mexican and South American surrealist collections, which include the archives of Vicente Huidobro, Enrique Gómez-Correa, César Moro, Enrique Lihn, and Emilio Westphalen.

"A major contribution to the literature this compendium of the work of surrealist artist, Juan Carlos Libertti (b. Argentina) is an essential reference for 20th century art. Rafael Siquirru in his essay says: I would be mistaken if I were to highlight his essential concern with form, understood as a forceful visual presence rendered in terms of volume and weight. I believe this artist has succeeded in elevating his to the level of painting with the highest classical quality in the Renaissance sense of the worl. I consider it important to highlight that in in each of his achievements Liberti expresses himself as what he is: "a great painter" (p. 14)"--Provided by vendor.

Bringing together sixty-five primary documents vital to understanding the history of art in Latin America since 1900, Patrick Frank shows how modern art developed in Latin America in this important new work complementing his previous book, Twentieth-Century Art of Latin America, Revised and Expanded Edition. Besides autobiographies, manifestos, interviews, and artists’ statements, the editor has assembled material from videos, blogs, handwritten notes, flyers, lectures, and even an after-dinner speech. As the title suggests, many of the texts have a polemical or argumentative cast. In these documents, many of which appear in English for the first time, the artists themselves describe what they hope to accomplish and what they see as obstacles. Designed to show how modern art developed in Latin America, the documents begin with early modern expressions in the early twentieth century, then proceed through the avant-garde of the 1920s, the architectural boom of midcentury, and the Cold War years, and finally conclude with the postmodern artists in the new century.

New Geographies Of Abstract Art In Postwar Latin America written by Mariola V. Alvarez and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-20 with Art, Abstract categories.

This edited volume examines the history of abstract art across Latin America after 1945. This form of art grew in popularity across the Americas in the postwar period, often serving to affirm a sense of being modern and the right of Latin America to assume the leading role Europe had played before World War II. Latin American artists practiced gestural and geometric abstraction, though the history of art has favored the latter. Recent scholarship, for instance, has focused on geometric abstraction from Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela. The book aims to expand the map and consider this phenomenon as it developed in neglected regions such as Central America, the Caribbean, and the Andes, investigating how this style came to stand in for Latin American contemporary art.
