This book intends to share the lessons and experiences learnt from the Chinese parasitic diseases control programme to the professionals, policy makers and researchers from other disease endemic countries. Especially, those lessons on surveillance and response have been well distilled at national level in China, where some of parasitic diseases have been and going to be eliminated, e.g. lymphatic filariasis, malaria, schistosomiasis. The book covers the concept and technologies on surveillance and response to endemic and outbreaks of parasitic diseases, as well as relevant case management and data handling. The book includes three main parts. The first part consists of general chapters, which covers the general information on parasitic disease surveillance, the classification and application of surveillance technologies, etc. The second part of chapters cover surveillance technologies on parasites distribution, infections patterns in a region, related vectors, ecological environment elements, and the early warning and response, etc. In the third part of chapters, the concepts, methods, operating procedures, data collection, result analysis, reports and conclusions of various surveillance technologies in detail, along with the examples and guidelines of surveillance and management for parasitic infections are included. The book is likely to be of interest to the world-wide professionals, practitioners, managers and policy makers in governments or industry in the field of infectious diseases control.

This book introduces the changing patterns of schistosomiasis transmission in China at different stages. Arduous efforts have been made in the last 7 decades to control and eliminate schistosomiasis in China using various control strategies, such as snail control to reduce the intensity of the disease transmission, morbidity control to reduce disease prevalence, and integrated control strategies to block the disease transmission, supported by governments at different levels. This book also presents the scientific progresses which technically support the control and surveillance of schistosomiasis in the field. It summarizes the working mechanism and control strategies of multi-sectoral collaboration to promote the national control programme leading to schistosomiasis elimination eventually.

It is clear that many fascinating problems still remain to be addressed in parasite transmission modelling, from better understanding of transmission processes and natural history of infection to investigating the impact of ecological and spatial scales, climate change, host immunity and social behaviour, parasite-host evolutionary dynamics and parasite community ecology on parasite transmission. This book captures some of the advances made in recent years and provides indications of ways forward for addressing these questions by shedding light on developments in conceptual frameworks and modelling tools as well as the emergence of new data forms for aiding model construction, testing and analysis. Another important advance has been the parallel development of robust computationally-intensive statistical methods to allow model testing and parameterization by aiding the fitting of models to complex data. This is an exciting area of work, which we believe will broaden the scope of mathematical modelling in investigating parasite transmission processes. In particular, we expect this advance will now allow modellers to begin the successful development and analysis of mechanistically-rich models of parasite transmission that will facilitate better integration of the variety of mechanisms increasingly recognized as important in simultaneously affecting transmission, including abiotic processes, trophic and evolutionary interactions, movement in space, and behaviour and even physiology of the individual. We foresee a continuing bright future for using mathematical modelling to clarify parasite transmission dynamics and address problems related to effective parasite control. Ultimately, through this improved application of models to research and management, we expect that parasite control would be an achievable goal bringing benefits to a vast number of our fellow human beings.

Food Safety in China: Science, Technology, Management and Regulation presents a comprehensive overview of the history and current state of food safety in China, along with emerging regulatory trends and the likely future needs of the country. Although the focus is on China, global perspectives are presented in the chapters and 33 of the 99 authors are from outside of China. Timely and illuminating, this book offers invaluable insights into our understanding of a critical link in the increasingly globalized complex food supply chain of today's world.
