This study presents data from a survey of 339 faculty predominantly in the sciences and social sciences about their use of artificial intelligence to improve their writing. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: are faculty using AI to improve their writing? How many are doing so and in what academic fields is it most pronounced? Which applications are they using? How often are they using these applications and for what kinds of writing? What tasks in the writing process are they using AI for and what problems have they encountered? What advice can they give to their peers?Just a few of the many findings from this 49-page report are: More than 36% of faculty teaching at colleges and universities with fewer than 5,000 enrolled students FTE were using AI to aid their writing.Faculty teaching in medical schools submitted 19.5% of their writing projects to an artificial intelligence application for editing or other improvement.Younger respondents were far likelier than older ones to feel that AI was helping their writing. Data in the report was derived from a survey drawing 339 responses from faculty from 100 colleges and universities in the USA; it was conducted from November 2023 to February 2024. Data is broken out by variables related to the institutional affiliation of the survey participants (enrollment size, public/private status/ as well as personal characteristics such as age, gender, and academic field.

Academic researchers want their research to be understood and used by non-technical audiences, but that requires communication that is more accessible in the form of non-technical and shorter summaries. The researcher must both signal the quality of the research and ensure that the content is salient by making it more readable. AI tools can improve salience; however, they can also lead to ambiguity in the signal since true effort is then difficult to observe. We implement an online factorial experiment providing non-technical audiences with a blog on an academic paper and vary the actual author of the blog from the same paper (human or ChatGPT) and whether respondents are told the blog is written by a human or AI tool. Even though AI-generated blogs are objectively of higher quality, they are rated lower, but not if the author is disclosed as AI, indicating that signaling is important and can be distorted by AI. Use of the blog does not vary by experimental arm. The findings suggest that, provided disclosure statements are included, researchers can potentially use AI to reduce effort costs without compromising signaling or salience. Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the capability of algorithms integrated into systems and tools to learn from data so that they can perform automated tasks without explicit programming of every step by a human. Generative AI is a category of AI techniques in which algorithms are trained on data sets that can be used to generate new content, such as text, images or video. This guidance addresses one type of generative AI, large multi-modal models (LMMs), which can accept one or more type of data input and generate diverse outputs that are not limited to the type of data fed into the algorithm. It has been predicted that LMMs will have wide use and application in health care, scientific research, public health and drug development. LMMs are also known as “general-purpose foundation models”, although it is not yet proven whether LMMs can accomplish a wide range of tasks and purposes.
