The advent of fiber optic transmission systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) have led to a dramatic increase in the usable bandwidth of single fiber systems. This book provides detailed coverage of survivability (dealing with the risk of losing large volumes of traffic data due to a failure of a node or a single fiber span) and traffic grooming (managing the increased complexity of smaller user requests over high capacity data pipes), both of which are key issues in modern optical networks. A framework is developed to deal with these problems in wide-area networks, where the topology used to service various high-bandwidth (but still small in relation to the capacity of the fiber) systems evolves toward making use of a general mesh. Effective solutions, exploiting complex optimization techniques, and heuristic methods are presented to keep network problems tractable. Newer networking technologies and efficient design methodologies are also described.

Survivable Optical WDM Networks investigates different approaches for designing and operating an optical network with the objectives that (1) more connections can be carried by a given network, leading to more revenue, and (2) connections can recover faster in case of failures, leading to better services. Different networks – wavelength-routed WDM networks, wavelength-routed WDM networks with sub-wavelength granularity grooming, and data over next-generation SONET/SDH over WDM networks – are covered. Different approaches are proposed to explore every aspect of a protection scheme such as: (1) Protection granularity: a. At wavelength granularity. b. At sub-wavelength granularity (2) Protection entity: a. Path protection. b. Sub-path protection. c. Segment protection. (3) Routing: a. Single-path routing. b. Multi-path routing. Tradeoffs between different objectives, e.g., resource efficiency vs. recovery time, are explored and practical approaches are proposed and analyzed.

The objective of this book is to provide timely and comprehensive coverage of the principles, technology, practice, and future of tra?c grooming in op- cal networks. Tra?c grooming considerations are already shaping new switch designs and standards, including next generation Synchronous Optical N- work/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SONET/SDH) and Generic Framing Procedure (GFP), are a?ecting future optical network technologies, and are creating new business opportunities. Yet information on the topic is sc- tered and there is a shortage of technical sources where relevant material can be accessed in a single location. The motivation for this book was to bridge this gap by providing a single authoritative point of reference to the tra?c grooming state of the art. Tra?c grooming is a complex subject, involving a number of interrelated concepts, standards, and technologies. It is also a rapidly growing ?eld of study, makingitdi?cultforasinglebooktocoverallaspectsindetail.Tocope with this scope and complexity, this book provides appropriate background information, followed by an in-depth study of a few key issues and challenges. It has been our intention to bring together a broad range of perspectives from preeminent researchers in both academia and industry. We believe that these multiple, diverse points of view add considerable value and make the contents more interesting to the reader.

Optical networks are leaving the labs and becoming a reality. Despite the current crisis of the telecom industry, our everyday life increasingly depends on communication networks for information exchange, medicine, education, data transfer, commerce, and many other endeavours. High capacity links are required by the large futemet traffic demand, and optical networks remain one of the most promising technologies for meeting these needs. WDM systems are today widely deployed, thanks to low-cost at extreme data rates and high reliability of optical components, such as optical amplifiers and fixed/tunable filters and transceivers. Access and metropolitan area networks are increasingly based on optical technologies to overcome the electronic bottleneck at the network edge. Traditional multi-layer architectures, such as the widely deployed IP/ATM/SDH protocol stack, are increasingly based on WDM transport; further efforts are sought to move at the optical layer more of the functionalities available today in higher protocol layers. New components and subsystems for very high speed optical networks offer new design opportunities to network operators and designers. The trends towards dynamically configurable all-optical network infrastructures open up a wide range of new network engineering and design choices, which must face issues such as interoperability and unified control and management.
