How to face the future with resilience, optimism and strength - and why setting goals might not be the smartest thing you might do!?How do we grab the wheel of our lives and steer into calmer waters? The world into which we are moving seems to be one on which the old rules do not apply or do not work. So, what are we going to do for ourselves if we are to flourish as individuals and leaders? We won't by following checklists and goal setting and the advice of armchair experts according to Steve Bonham, award-winning psychologist, writer, adventurer, musician, and 'vagabond philosopher'. In his new book Steve weaves a spell of new research, story, and wry observation from a life on the road to provide a 'liberation strategy' towards a more resilient, fulfilling life."How to Survive ..." is challenging, funny, radical, and unlike any other 'How To' book you have ever read!Arguing that surviving and thriving today is not about setting a few goals and setting off after them, it's all about all about fundamentally changing your relationship with the world Steve Bonham sets out a wise, sometimes funny and essentially practical 'playbook' for the mad world we now live in.In this 'new normal the following will be true: -We're not going to thrive with a servant mindset expecting to be told what to do by our masters and experts -Life will be an artisan craft. Having a goal does not bake you a cake or make you a table. Having skill, inspiration, hands-on knowledge of the materials and ingredients does. Life is the same! -Sometimes it's better that you let success come to you rather than furiously seeking it - but you must be ready to embrace it when it does.-The purpose of life is not to achieve great things but to inhabit yourself as fully as possible - in doing this you may end up truly great.Building on insights such as the strange importance of inconsistency, the value of getting lost and the art of expecting the unexpected, becoming the captain of your ship, Steve Bonham offers 'Five Rules for the new roads we must travel backed by the latest research, great stories and sometimes provocative ideas. But these 'rules' he argues should be followed for guidance not constraint for the road to liberation is always unique and personal."We are sometimes undiscovered lands to ourselves. We are not fixed and limited people, we all have huge amounts of untapped possibility. Let's go explore"

Your Future On The Faculty written by Joshua Schimel and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023 with Education categories.

How are the human and institutional systems fundamental to succeeding in academia? In graduate school we are trained how to be scholars, and maybe how to be effective teachers. But there is much more to being a college or university faculty member--and most of it is left to figure out on one's own. This job isn't hard because the core scholarship is hard, but because of thecomplex mix of activities that scholars must figure out how to juggle. These are dominated by human and institutional structures within departments, universities, societies, and professional communities. Succeeding and thriving as an academic calls for developing wider, "non-academic" insights andskills into how these operate and how to operate effectively with, and within, them. Functioning as an academic is about the relationships we develop with our communities of students, campus colleagues, professional peers, and our university administrative and support staff--the people who enablefaculty members to function.Your Future as a Faculty Member: How to Survive and Thrive in Academia is organized into four sections, each focusing on one aspect of the human systems that are fundamental to succeeding as an academic. Section 1 starts in the center with new professors, as they build their career. Section 2 looksat university administrative systems and the staff who manage them. Section 3 focuses on teaching and training roles. Finally, Section 4 looks at wider professional networks outside of university, publishers and academic communities.

Failing Our Future written by Joshua R. Eyler and has been published by JHU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-27 with Education categories.

An indictment of the grading system in American schools and colleges—and a blueprint for how we can change it. One of the most urgent and long-standing issues in the US education system is its obsession with grades. In Failing Our Future, Joshua R. Eyler shines a spotlight on how grades inhibit learning, cause problems between parents and children, amplify inequities, and contribute to the youth mental health crisis. Eyler, who runs the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at the University of Mississippi, illustrates how grades interfere with students' intrinsic motivation and perpetuate the idea that school is a place for competition rather than discovery. Grades force students to focus on rewards and distract them from exploring ideas or pursuing interests beyond what they'll be tested on. In fact, grades significantly impede the learning process. They are also significantly affecting children's physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation have spiked, and academic stress tied to grades is a leading cause of this escalation. Eyler shares success stories of grading reform efforts that are already under way as an antidote to the harms caused by the practices currently used in educational institutions. Equal parts scathing and hopeful, Failing Our Future aims to improve the lives of students by encouraging them to define success on their own terms. Parents, educators, policymakers, and students will find in these pages a rallying cry for change and a blueprint for how to implement reforms in our homes and classrooms.

The Scholar S Survival Manual written by Martin H. Krieger and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-22 with Education categories.

The product of a lifetime of experience in American universities, The Scholar's Survival Manual offers advice for students, professors, and administrators on how to get work done, the path to becoming a professor, getting tenured, and making visible contributions to scholarship, as well as serving on promotion and tenure committees. Martin H. Krieger covers a broad cross section of the academic experience from a graduate student's first foray into the job market through retirement. Because advice is notoriously difficult to take and context matters a great deal, Krieger has allowed his ideas to percolate through dozens of discussions. Some of the advice is instrumental, matters of expediency; some demands our highest aspirations. Readers may open the book at any place and begin reading; for the more systematic there is a detailed table of contents. Krieger's tone is direct, an approach born of the knowledge that students and professors too often ignore suggestions that would have prevented them from becoming academic roadkill. This essential book will help readers sidestep a similar fate.

Stay the Course prepares first-year college students for the challenges they will face while orienting their focus on God to help them when they feel overwhelmed mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. The college experience can be wonderful yet terrifying—at the same time! Stay the Course supports students in the transition from high school through their first year of college—the most critical time of adjustment. Students will benefit from practical advice and find inspiration and encouragement through relevant scripture and prayer. Daily devotions are short to allow opportunity for reading in their busy schedule, but each is applicable to the challenging, stressful, and sometimes terrifying college experience. First-year students struggle adjusting to being away from home, adapting appropriately to increased independence, coping with campus life, and accepting the challenging requirements of university academics. While the book does not promise to make the college journey free from all trials and tribulations, this devotional handbook provides strategies for success and spiritual mentoring to help beginning (and continuing) students scale the challenging mountain of college. From tasks in the summer to ease the transition, to giving inside information on dealing with difficult professors, a long-time university teacher and student mentor shares insight to help students not to be overwhelmed in their first year of college.
