With the impact of globalization and intensification of information technology, the ideas and practices of enterprise management are also changing rapidly nowadays. A practice that was incompletely unheard of yesterday may soon become a model for everyone to learn from tomorrow. The development of information technology has blurred the boundaries between work and non-work, and employees today have more options to work from home. At the same time, the family structure has also become more diversified, with different types of income structures, bringing many possibilities for work and family care models. In addition, the government’s social policies, such as school-to-work transitional regulations and the extended retirement age, suggest that people today may face a quite different labor market situation, compared to other generations. As individuals are facing longer and more complicated working life, it is very important to ensure their long-term employability by creating a healthy and successful career.

Organizational restructuring and global, hypercompetition have revolutionized careers and destroyed the traditional blueprint for advancement and career success. This book details the new forms work takes in the new organizational era where worker mobility has become critical to the well-being and learning of both people and firms. The Boundaryless Career approaches the new principle of the boundaryless career in five directions. The first section helps the reader explore the nature of boundaryless careers by highlighting some of their essential elements. The second section turns to competitive advantage and the role of workers' knowledge. The thirs section concentrates on the role of the social structure in the organizing of work. The fourth section turns to focus on how boundaryless careers affect personal development and growth. The fifth section addresses the demands boundaryless careers create for schools, communities, and other social institutions. Introductory and concluding chapters by the editors offer frameworks for conceptualizing careers now and in the future. The Boundaryless Career provides a conceptual map of new career and employment forms to the prospective benefit of people making career choices, companies re-crafting human resource practices, schools and universities re-considering their roles, and policy-makers concerned with regional or national competitiveness. It will be essential reading for scholars in a range of social science disciplines spanning themes of economics, management, education, organizational behavior, and the psychology and sociology of work. It will also appeal broadly to free thinkers interested in the changing nature of careers and employment as both people and firms tackle the realities of increasingly open markets and global competition.

Scientific Essay from the year 2007 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: Disctinction, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, language: English, abstract: ABSTRACT As companies seamlessly move across the globe in search of talent and resources, so to are highly skilled individuals taking up this opportunity to choose a job which best meets their goals and expectations. People are making more frequent job moves than in the past, in their pursuit of boundaryless careers. This unpredictable, non-linear career creates opportunities as well as problems for both individuals and organisations. In particular, it affects both individual and organisational learning, and, since knowledge is power, it affects the prosperity of both. Both individuals and companies need to ensure that boundaryless careers do not adversely affect learning at the person and organisational level. At the person level, lack of learning has clear implications for future employability. At the organisation level, lack of learning will adversely affect long-term (and in today’s fast-changing world, even short-term) company performance. Employees are left with little choice but to learn continuously and to expand their networks to maintain employability. Organisations, on the other hand, are left with little choice but to provide interesting and meaningful work, as well as broad management support, that enhances individual’s skills and develops and sustains careers. 1. Introduction Globalisation and technological advances are bringing new opportunities as well as challenges to both individuals and organisations. As companies seamlessly move across the globe in search of talent and resources, so to are highly skilled individuals taking up this opportunity to choose a job which best meets their goals and expectations. Evidently, both men and women are making more frequent job moves than in the past (Ackah and Heaton, 2004) keenly, perhaps, navigating across employers and geographies, aided by extensive social and professional connections (Arthur and Rousseau, 1996). This new breed of people are pursuing boundaryless careers - careers, it seems, limited only by their imagination. This chaotic, nonlinear, network-centered career (Arthur and Rousseau, 1996) is marked by a variety of tasks, redefinitions of one’s profession, fits-and-starts (Mirvis and Hall, 1994), which creates opportunities as well as problems for both individuals and organisations. This volume provokes conversations and reflections on the most appropriate methodologies to pursue Career Development Learning (CDL) research within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)s. Drawing on studies with Australian students from diverse backgrounds, including low socioeconomic status, regional, rural and remote, with disability, etc., this volume uniquely highlights considerations for contextual and inclusive CDL research which advances multiple SDGs and quality futures across the globe. Although situated in Australian contexts, the case studies have international applicability. This volume provides support to researchers who intend to investigate the effectiveness of career development strategies which further sustainable development objectives. Specifically, the book highlights the importance of partnership and innovative methods in socially-just research methodologies as well as practical ways that these can be undertaken. It encourages readers to consider how they might frame their work in relation to the SDGs and create impactful research which furthers the agenda for sustainable development in localised ways.

This book is the product of a series of reflections by career counseling and guidance specialists on a question central to society: "How can career and life design interventions contribute to fair and sustainable development and to the implementation of decent work all over the world? ". This question was formulated by Professor J. Guichard, the director of the UNESCO Chair in Lifelong Guidance and counseling at the University of Wroclaw, Poland. The researchers involved in this Chair’s activities proposed answers which form the chapters of this book. These reflections emphasize the need to focus on the study and implementation of certain central psychological processes which can enable individuals to face the main challenges of our society. The contributions also propose new avenues of intervention for career counseling and guidance. The entire book is the bedrock of a program of research and interventions to be implemented in order that the field of career counseling and guidance plays a key role for individuals who must design their lives in a rapidly changing, and ever more complex context. This book is therefore a major scientific contribution and marks a turning point for researchers and practitioners in career counseling and guidance, and for all professionals who support the self-construction of individuals in the 21st century. "The authors draw on a diverse range of disciplines and research traditions and offer readers a rich array of insights, helping them reflect on how career guidance can be mobilised to serve citizens in a world that is increasingly challenged by complex, seemingly intractable problems. A central, crosscutting concern is the ways in which career guidance can foster well-being by facilitating access to meaningful and fulfilling work in contexts that promote equity, social justice, and dignity for all. While engaging the micro-worlds of individuals, and throwing light on their valiant efforts to design a life that realises their hopes and aspirations, it is a commendable feature of many of these papers that they do not eschew the societal – indeed planetary – stage across which personal dramas are enacted.” Prof. Ronald G. Sultana, Director, Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Educational Research, University of Malta. "The primary strengths.....are the authors' capacity to provide forward thinking perspectives on the important issue of sustainable lifelong interventions and career design in its broadest sense. The volume offers depth in a way of thinking that is pertinent to the 21st century and provokes both an in interest in the further study of this domain as well as providing tools and references for novice and experienced researchers and professionals. The book is sure to become a major text in the field." Prof. Maurice Taylor, Faculty of Education, University of Ottawa, Canada
