Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: B+, University of Auckland, language: English, abstract: Forest management is a highly complex issue which entails the management of the many dynamic components of a forest system, including the oft-neglected human component. Due to the inherent differences in priorities and perspectives of native forest 'users' and state forest 'managers' forest management has nearly always been characterized by disagreement, competition and conflict. Given the growing need for a resolution to the global issue of forest degradation, a number of solutions have been put forward, the foremost of which has been Collaborative Forest Management (CFM). CFM is a dynamic approach to solving environmental, socio-economic, and political issues among forest stakeholders including governments through the combined management of forest by all stakeholders. Proponents of CFM believe that this approach brings together the knowledge and resources of all the actors in a forest system, thereby increasing the scope for management, However, opponents to CFM argue that such a simplistic view of CFM fails to take into account the lack of equity between stakeholders which leads to further conflict. A satisfactory appraisal of the potential for CFM to promote 'sustainable' forest use requires an evaluation of the many arguments, both for and against the concept. This essay aims to do just that by reviewing the literature and presenting contrasting views for both arguments.

Village Voices Forest Choices written by Mark Poffenberger and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Political Science categories.

Village Voices, Forest Choices offers the first comprehensive examination of revolutionary changes occurring in the management of India's forests. Over the past two decades, responding to scarcities, thousands of villages have taken charge of public forests, thereby controlling grazing and cutting. The result has been a striking renewal of once badly degraded ecosystems. Lush young secondary forests are emerging in many parts of central India, rich in biodiversity, where degrading, eroding wastelands were recently dominant. Equally remarkable, this has often happened with no outside assistance. The fourteen contributors to this book look at how this has occurred, including the institutional, economic, ecological, and political implications of this historic transformation. They assess how management goals for natural forests will change under community control and how government agencies, scientists, and other organizations might respond to these shifting priorities. Anyone concerned with the state of India's forests, or those interested in forestry and environmental policies will want this study.

The concept of forest sustainability dates from centuries ago, although the understanding of sustainable forest management (SFM) as an instrument that harmonizes ecological and socio-economic concerns is relatively new. The change in perspective occurred at the beginning of the 1990s in response to an increased awareness of the deterioration of the environment, in particular of the alarming loss of forest resources. The book collects original case studies from 12 different countries in four continents (Africa, America, Asia and Europe). These studies represent a wide variation of experiences from developing and developed countries, and should clarify the current status of SFM worldwide and the problems associated with its implementation.
