This report explores the benefits of Asia and the Pacific’s coral reefs, outlines the myriad risks they face from climate change, pollution, and development, and considers how nature-positive investments can finance their protection and restoration. Outlining how over 85% of the region’s reefs are under threat, the report looks at the first ever insurance policy taken out on coral reefs in Mexico and considers how parametric insurance can be adopted in the region. Focused on managing degraded and disaster-damaged reefs, it shows how innovative products including catastrophe bonds and blue carbon credit can protect critical ecosystem services and enhance coastal resilience.

The “blue economy” is defined as the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources to drive economic growth and improve livelihoods, while protecting and nurturing marine ecosystems. In this publication, investment approaches, opportunities, and finance mechanisms that can promote and catalyze funds for a sustainable ocean economy are discussed. Multilateral and bilateral funding sources, a market-based approach, incentives, and regulations, among others, are presented. Also considered is the need to align these elements with a cohesive development framework for the blue economy.

The Sulu-Sulawesi Marine Ecoregion (SSME), as the apex of the Coral Triangle, is considered the center of the center of marine biodiversity where the highest number of colorful reef and marine fishes, various sizes of corals and shells, myriad shapes of algae, and protective mangrove forests are found. The SSME's marine aquarium is not only a delightful lure for tourists but is also the source of food and a natural capital for livelihoods among coastal communities. To address threats to SSME's diversity and productivity, an ecoregion conservation plan was forged collaboratively by Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines in 2004. As the management framework to address threats to its diversity and productivity, the SSME Ecoregion Conservation Plan has spurred the development of three comprehensive action plans for 2010-2012. These plans are implemented by the subcommittees on Migratory and Threatened Species, Marine Protected Areas and Networks, and Sustainable Fisheries, and guided by the SSME's Tri-National Committee. This publication includes business plans and cost estimates to implement the three action plans---providing useful guide on costs and activities for governments, prospective donors, and investors; valuable information from cost-benefit analyses; and lessons learned from past conservation efforts.

"The decline of coral ... if it continues ... will mark the end of one of the great beauties of creation and the end of a great hope that of discovering life forms hitherto unknown on the Earth ... Let us not forget that we are responsible to posterity for the preservation of the beauties of the sea as well as for those on land. We must learn how to make use of the biological and mineral resources of the oceans ... But we must also learn how to preserve the integrity and the equilibrium of that world which is so inextricably bound to our own." - Jacques Yves Cousteau, Excerpt from Life and Death in a Coral Sea, 1971 This book reports on the World Bank's 5th Annual Conference on Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development, which focused on some of the most urgent threats facing coral reefs today, including the growing use of cyanide fishing along some of the richest reefs of the world, unsustainable trade in reef products, and constraints to effective establishment and management of marine protected areas. The proceedings stressed the need for strengthening the policy environment while adopting economic incentives and improved resource valuation techniques, informing management decisions through targeted research and monitoring, and rallying public support through environmental education and the media.

Although the case studies raise a variety of issues, they all highlight the threats to coral reefs; management challenges and lessons learnt.

Coral Reef Conservation written by Isabelle M. Côté and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-08-17 with Nature categories.

Coral reefs are the 'rain forests' of the ocean, containing the highest diversity of marine organisms and facing the greatest threats from humans. As shallow-water coastal habitats, they support a wide range of economically and culturally important activities, from fishing to tourism. Their accessibility makes reefs vulnerable to local threats that include over-fishing, pollution and physical damage. Reefs also face global problems, such as climate change, which may be responsible for recent widespread coral mortality and increased frequency of hurricane damage. This book, first published in 2006, summarises the state of knowledge about the status of reefs, the problems they face, and potential solutions. The topics considered range from concerns about extinction of coral reef species to economic and social issues affecting the well-being of people who depend on reefs. The result is a multi-disciplinary perspective on problems and solutions to the coral reef crisis.
