This book, conceived in the 2010s, demonstrates that the thesis of renewable energy prevailed. Despite still having a long way to go, after the epic battle between the forces of maintaining fossil fuels in the energy market in Brazil and in the U.S. and the favorable winds of energy and renewable energy infrastructure projects, renewables advanced quickly and are here to stay, whether we like it or not. Renewable energy developments that have taken place in the past decade (from 2010 when this book was conceived to 2020) shaped the way we humans function in society. In this book, the author highlights the beginning of the history of the oil industry in Brazil and oil in the US and the bold and baby steps towards renewables. The rest is history validating itself in the daily life of the third decade of the 21st century until we reach the massive scale of the electric vehicle industry already represented by Tesla, Li Auto, NIO, Lucid Motors, Rivian, among others. Indeed, we see a great change and orientation towards sustainability. In this case, the direction became more important than the speed of implementation of the green, global, diversified future. The question in the current chapter of humanity is whether the concept of sustainability will be expanded to reach the political dimension through the current weakening of Western democracies in the modern world facing massive challenges such as global pandemics, the emergence and rapid expansion in all economic sectors and industries of artificial intelligence, robotics, not to mention the threats of nuclear wars and cyber-attacks between nations and global environmental devastation.

Must freedom be sacrificed to achieve ecological sustainability - or vice versa? Can we be genuinely free and live in sustainable societies? This book argues that we can, if we recognise and celebrate our ecological embeddedness, rather than seeking to transcend it. But this does not mean freedom can simply be redefined to fit within ecological limits. Addressing current unsustainability will involve significant restrictions, and hence will require political justification, not just scientific evidence. Drawing on material from perfectionist liberalism, capabilities approaches, human rights, relational ethics and virtue theory, Michael Hannis explores the relationship between freedom and sustainability, considering how each contributes to human flourishing. He argues that a substantive and ecologically literate conception of human flourishing can underpin both capability-based environmental rights and a eudaimonist ecological virtue ethics. With such a foundation in place, public authorities can act both to facilitate ecological virtue, and to remove structural incentives to ecological vice. Freedom and Environment is a lucid addition to existing literature in environmental politics and virtue ethics, and will be an excellent resource to those studying debates about freedom with debates about ecological sustainability.

This book proposes a holistic transdisciplinary approach to sustainability as a subject of social sciences. At the same time, this approach shows new ways, as perspectives of philosophy, political science, law, economics, sociology, cultural studies and others are here no longer regarded separately. No matter how many resources we consume we never seem to have enough. The Economics of Abundance is a balanced book in which Wolfgang Hoeschele challenges why this is so. He claims that our current capitalist economy can exist only on the basis of manufactured scarcity created by 'scarcity-generating institutions', and these institutions manipulate both demand and supply of commodities. Therefore demand consistently exceeds supply, and profits and economic growth can continue - at the cost of individual freedom, social equity, and ecological sustainability. The fact that continual increases in demand are so vital to our economy leads to an impasse: many people see no alternative to the generation of ever more demand, but at the same time recognize that it is clearly unsustainable ecologically and socially. So, can demand only be reduced by curtailing freedom and is this acceptable? This book argues that, by analyzing how scarcity-generating institutions work and then reforming or dismantling them, we can enhance individual freedom and support entrepreneurial initiative, and at the same time make progress toward social justice and environmental sustainability by reducing demands on vital resources. This vision would enable activists in many fields (social justice, civil liberties, and environmental protection), as well as many entrepreneurs and other members of civil society to work together much more effectively, make it more difficult to portray all these groups as contradictory special interests, and thereby help generate momentum for positive change.
