(Travel plans are measures to manage travel to and from a site, and to reduce reliance on the car as a means of getting to work.) The guidance also assesses the Department for Transport's travel plan evaluation tool against NHS trust travel plans; provides a matrix to estimate a base level of car-parking provision (on the accompanying CD-ROM); identifies links to other assessment tools; suggests how to collect and monitor data; identifies successful partnership working, what encourages and motivates trusts, staff and the public; considers environmentally-friendly transport options. The key elements of best practice are: financial incentives or disincentives; car-parking constraints and management; a range of alternative modes of transport; strong management support; progressive incremental implementation over time; clear objectives; close partnership with local authorities and public transport operators; dedicated staff responsible for travel plans; and, very significantly, designation of a travel plan manager or champion.

Conventional parking management systems frequently fail to make the most use of the space that is available, which causes traffic jams, higher emissions, and general annoyance for both vehicles and city residents. The incorporation of advanced technology into parking lots has surfaced as a viable approach to tackle these difficulties, providing improved user experience, real-time monitoring, and optimization. Solar power integration is one creative way to improve the sustainability and usability of smart parking systems. The use of solar energy has grown as a sustainable and green substitute for conventional grid electricity.
