Solid waste management is a global concern, and landfilling remains the predominant management method in most areas of the world. This book provides a comprehensive view of state-of-the-art methods to manage landfills more sustainably, drawing upon more than two decades of research, design, and operational experiences at operating sites across the world. Sustainable landfills implement one or multiple technologies to control and enhance the degradation of waste materials to realize a multitude of potential benefits during or shortly after the landfill’s operating phase. This book presents detailed approaches in the development, design, operation, and monitoring of sustainable landfills. Case studies showcasing the benefits and challenges of sustainable landfill technologies are also provided to give the reader additional context. The intent of the book is to serve as a reference guide for regulatory personnel, a practical tool for designers and engineers to build on for site-specific applications of sustainable landfill technologies, and a comprehensive resource for researchers who are continuing to explore new and better ways to more sustainably manage waste materials.

The management of municipal solid waste in many countries throughout the world has changed significantly over the past fifty years, with a shift from uncontrolled dumping or burning to complex systems that integrate multiple processes to recover materials or energy and provide containment to reduce environmental impacts. This volume, the first in the series Waste Management Principles, gives readers a comprehensive overview of advances in sustainable landfill design and operation. The authors developed this volume to serve as a tool for designers, regulators, and other parties interested in sustainable landfill practices and to be used in conjunction with fundamental design methodologies, location-specific regulations, new and emerging research results, and good engineering judgment. Dozens of graphs, figures, and tables provided throughout the text provide the designer with an excellent foundation to begin their analysis and apply the principles from this book to their site or facility. In like fashion, operational experiences are provided throughout, tying in the important underlying fundamental concepts (e.g., accelerated gas production after liquids addition) to critical operational considerations (e.g., how to effectively collect the additional gas that is produced). The body of work presented here results from the development of bioreactor landfill design guidelines for the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Risk Manageme nt Laboratory, along with the combined knowledge and experience of the authors pertaining to sustainable practices for design and operation of sanitary landfills. .

Reinvent Your Waste is a book about the history of waste, or garbage, and the progression of waste management and recycling in the United States, with some special emphasis on the state of Michigan. The book highlights four themes – respect, recover, reinvent, and restore, with each section offering insights and inspiration for those who want to be better stewards for Earth. In plain language, the author answers questions such as: • What is the growing waste doing to our natural ecosystems and to Earth’s ancient systems? • Can the negative impact of waste somehow be reversed? • Is waste – particularly material solid waste and products – being properly valued and used? Every year, millions of tons of waste go to landfills across the country and are considered safely buried to decompose. Are there more innovative ways to recover waste and create greater value, economically speaking? This study hits on many topics, but all are aligned to handle waste in a more sustainable and steward-like way. The major theme of the book is to inspire all people in society to reinvent waste.

This book addresses one of the major solid waste streams resulting from modern society, construction and demolition debris (CDD). CDD in the past has not received the same attention as other waste streams (e.g., municipal solid waste), but with the growing recognition of the environmental and economic importance of proper CDD management, this material now is the focus of attention of many government agencies and private businesses. This book provides a comprehensive review of CDD, its characteristics, environmental risks, and regulatory requirements, along with an in-depth discussion of the issues pertaining to CDD recycling and disposal.

Soil Degradation Consolidation Theory And Its Applications written by Yunmin Chen and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-11-15 with Science categories.
This book focuses on skeleton-degradable soils, including three typical degradation processes of soil skeletons: soil particle breakage, chemical degradation, and biochemical degradation. Corresponding degradation models and constitutive models are proposed, and a degradation–consolidation theory is established. The theory overcomes the limitations of classical soil mechanics, such as the constant solid-phase mass assumption, and addresses the neglect of the effects of consolidation on degradation in environmental engineering. The theory provides key theoretical foundations and new analytical perspectives for understanding phenomena such as the degradation–consolidation processes in municipal solid waste landfills, the decomposition and exploitation of natural gas hydrates, and the behavior evolution of geomaterials under the influence of particle breakage. This book offers detailed theoretical insights, rich experimental data, and advanced numerical and physical simulation methods, particularly in environmental hazards prevention and control in municipal solid waste landfills. Hence, it is suitable for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students engaged in soil constitutive relations, multi-field coupling problems, and related fields.
