Sustaining Grace explores the dynamic between new faith communities and denominational systems through the lens of stewardship and sustainability. As a collection, these essays suggest that to facilitate ecologies for innovation in our current era, established congregations and new faith communities must model the sustaining grace of God to one another in creative ways. Thus, problems of sustainability are not for church planters to solve alone, but rather are related to the theologies of stewardship and the ecclesial system to which they belong. Issues of vision are not for denominational systems to theorize alone, but are given shape on their historic foundations in the creative and prophetic structures practiced in new faith communities. This book speaks to a central tension in the growing movement of church planting--the mutual need of and the mutual frustration between establishment leaders and innovators, conservators and risk takers. Standing at the contact point of that tension in one of the wealthiest mainline denominations, 1001 New Worshipping Communities and Pittsburgh Theological Seminary engage the question of faithful stewardship with voices reflecting and strategizing on each side of the tension, broadening the conversation to include those beyond the Presbyterian Church, and bringing both the academy and practitioners from church judicatories, church plants, and traditional church communities to offer a theologically grounded, practical, and generative conversation.

Grace. We use the word often. We "say grace" before meals. "There but for the Grace of God go I." But do we know what it is? Do we fully understand the many dimensions of how Grace works? For many, the answer is "not really." Hence, Grace: A Workbook. Dr. Clark brilliantly incorporates the theology of Grace with the psychology of every day experiences, always focusing on the core of the Gospel. Grace: A Workbook is an invaluable tool to help us become the dynamic people that God has planned for us to be. It is a one-of-a-kind workbook written with a deep passion for the excitement of God's love and Grace. At the end, readers will come out with a fresh sense of Grace, as well as a fresh look at themselves and what we can become through the power of Grace. The goals of Grace: A Workbook, - To gain an in-depth understanding of Grace in an easy-to-read, easy-to-understand interactive format; This Workbook came about as a result of teaching for a year on Grace in her adult Sunday school class. In preparation, she read many excellent books about Grace. However, she realized that many people, because of their life experiences, may have confusion and/or uncertainty about how to incorporate Grace into their daily lives. Thus, these "lessons" were conceived. Each week in her class, as the lessons challenged the students to comprehend the power of God's love and Grace, they left feeling uplifted and excited to live their lives with a deeper faith and purpose in their Christian walk. Grace: A Workbook is interactive. It can have great benefit for someone to use individually, or, even more so, in a group setting. "Dr. Mary Clark knows from her personal journey, as well as from her vast clinical experience, how damaging it is to live under a veil of shame, law, and fear of punishment. Unfortunately, all too often, that is the crippling message conveyed by the church. Grace-A Workbook is a fragrant and thoroughly practical breath of fresh theological air, reconnecting us to the true heart of our gracious Father and his radically loving Son! Dr. Clark brings us not only the "grace insights" of a veteran Bible student but also compellingly addresses how grace can heal our brokenness, past and present. Thank you, Mary, for lifting up God's spectacular, unbelievable, life-giving unmerited favor!" -J. Joy would certainly be the first to admit that she is not a prolific writer, but a physician and surgeon by training. Her husband, Dr. David Miller, Christian Psychologist, encouraged her to write her life's story believing that her sharing what God helped her overcome, could help others. Joy agreed to write some excerpts of her life. This book is a personal testimony of God's sustaining grace during and through severe physical disabilities, emotional abuse, and mental anguish. Having suffered multiple times of desperation, despair, and depression, the surgeon-author transparently shares these experiences of her own surgical and spiritual healing in an easy-to-read fashion, with the hope her readers will find the encouragement to "Hold On" to God through every crisis in their own lives. Joy Diane Shields-Miller, MD grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in the little town of Jackson, Ohio. She majored in foreign missions at Circleville Bible College (now Ohio Christian University) for two years before transferring to the Ohio State University (OSU). At OSU, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in chemistry to fulfil pre-med requirements. In 1986, Joy attended the Medical College of Ohio (now Medical University of Ohio) in Toledo. She graduated with a Medical Doctor degree and began a Family Practice residency at Mercy Hospital, in Toledo's inner city. When a second year residency position became available in OB/GYN at Providence Hospital, Southfield, MI, she accepted. Following graduation from that program, she joined Dr. Ed Ricaurte in private practice in Oregon, Ohio. In 1997, she interviewed at Berger Hospital (now Ohio Health Berger), and became the first OB/GYN to open their new maternity ward. She has had extensive training in several medical/surgical fields including OB/GYN, vein surgery, and chronic wound care. Since 2015 until her retirement on January 4, 2021, she was Medical Director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Oxygen Center at the hospital. She currently loves horseback riding, playing softball with her family, cooking, and spending time with grandchildren. Her husband, Dr. David Miller, a Christian Psychologist, inspired her to write her incredible story. They live in Circleville, Ohio and are active members of Hedges Chapel, Churches of Christ in Christian Union.
