For anyone who has suffered loss, or is facing a personal trial, the pain can be overwhelming, and you might feel at a loss as to where to look for healing. From a young age I have wondered about the day that I will die and what my life will have meant. At the age of twenty-two, I was confronted by death in the form of cancer, and then again at age thirty-three in the form of heart disease. Those events helped clarify for me what direction my life should take, but only with the help of other people, my angels in the shadow of death. They helped show me the light when all I saw was darkness. And now I try to be an angel myself, to help those who feel like they are living in death's dark shadow. We should never have to suffer alone. This is the story of my journey from illness to health, from darkness to light, and I hope that it brings healing and light to all who read it.

After hours of careful thought, the Yeshiva administration posted a hand-lettered sign outside the cafeteria door. THE YESHIVA PROVIDES FOOD FOR ONE PORTION ONLY NO STUDENT IS PERMITTED TO STAND IN LINE FOR SECOND PORTION By the time I finished lunch, I noticed that some student had altered the sign in a subtle, Talmudic manner: THE YESHIVA PROVIDES FOOD FOR ONE PORTION ONLY? NO! STUDENT IS PERMITTED TO STAND IN LINE FOR SECOND PORTION. The Sea of Talmud is a brief introduction to the Talmud, viewed from the perspective of a newcomer to the world of the Yeshiva. Intended for readers with little background to the historical development of the Talmud and its relevance for Jewish observance, The Sea of Talmud hopes to inspire readers with the beauty and glory of traditional Yeshiva study.

Who is the biblical Gideon? A mighty warrior, or a fearful son? Hesitant solider, clever tactician, commanding father, ruthless killer, idolater, or illegitimate king? Gideon has long challenged readers of the book of Judges. How did so many conflicting portraits become inscribed in our biblical text and its reception? What might these portraits tell us about the authors, editors, and interpreters of Gideon's story-especially their expectations for men? Rewriting Masculinity interweaves redaction criticism, reception history, and masculinity studies to explore how Gideon's image changes from a mighty warrior to a weakling, from a successful leader to a man who led Israel astray. Kelly J. Murphy first considers the ways that older traditions about Gideon were rewritten throughout ancient Israel's history, sometimes in order to align the story of Gideon with new ideas about what it meant to act like a man. At other times, she shows that the story of Gideon was used to explain why older standards of masculinity no longer worked in new contexts. Murphy then traces how some later interpreters, from the ancient to the contemporary, continually rewrote Gideon in light of their own models for men, might, and masculinity. Murphy offers an in-depth case study of how a biblical text was continuously updated. Emphasizing the importance of reading biblical stories and expansions alongside their later reception, she shows that the story of Gideon the mighty warrior is, in many ways, the story of masculinity in miniature: a constantly-transforming construct.

Exploring Heutagogy In Higher Education written by Amnon Glassner and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-17 with Education categories.

This book explores heutagogy (self-determined learning) - a new approach to teaching and learning in higher education - and proposes a paradigm shift in teaching, learning, and the educational enterprise and ecosystem. The first part of the book presents the philosophical, psychological and sociological foundations of heutagogy, and describes lessons learned from prior experiences of its implementation. The second part presents a collaborative self-study of five heutagogy courses in higher education. The third discusses how the academic community can enhance the paradigm change, and compares heutagogy to similar academic approaches. The concluding chapter of the book explores the question of “what next”? and suggests some possible elaborations of heutagogy. “At the beginning, it was very difficult for me to appreciate the course’s mode of learning. All my life I had learned in a traditional manner. Occasionally I felt that I was being thrown into deep water without a lifeguard. ... But as the course progressed, I succeeded in letting go of my deeply rooted habits and discovered a new learning approach, through which I found in myself a new learner...” (Student’s reflection) “...this book suggests a novel approach to learning and education and will become a widely read one.” Dr. Lisa Marie Blaschke, Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg
