“Here’s charm and delight. A puzzle postlude to Three Men in a Boat.” —The Times London, 1889: After Jerome K Jerome’s Three Men in a Boat became a Victorian bestseller, rowing on the Thames was the great craze of 1889. When an elementary school teacher in training takes a midnight swim in the Thames and witnesses a body being dumped, Sergeant Cribb and Constable Thackerey are called to investigate. They uncover strange parallels with the enormously popular Victorian novel, but nobody will take them seriously. Following their instincts, they stick doggedly to the trail, which leads upstream to Oxford.

You think you have seen true love and amazing grit and determination? Compare it to that of George Young and his fiancée, Marie Forbes, in the true-life saga of their adventures from 1909 through World War I on a South Dakota homestead. The young college couple invested in homesteads for money to get married and send George to medical college. They would live on their claims for fourteen months and make improvements. After proving up, they would sell for a profit. Two years of drought changed their plans and their lives. There was no market for their land. George had to learn to farm to make a living. A neighbor with agricultural college training and immigrant neighbors helped them cope. After ten difficult years and a delayed marriage, the Youngs sold out, realizing a substantial wartime profit on their investment. They moved, with their two children, to an 800-acre farm in a warmer climate, near a thriving town in Kansas. George was a successful farmer and cattle rancher. Marie brought music and delicious bread to their neighborhood gatherings. Like many early settlers, the Youngs chose to raise their family in a rural community and looked forward to new adventures on the land.

Michael Jacobs has spent the last nine years working with the world's foremost golf scientist to develop the first analytics system to measure the actual forces and torques at work in a swing. Jacobs is uncovering the real physics of the swing-what causes the movements you ultimately see out on the course, on film or in a photograph. In this ground-breaking book, Jacobs takes you through both the science and the practical application of that science in unprecedented detail. You'll see the hidden similarities and differences between swings of players at every ability level, and learn how to evaluate your own swing based on real data-not guesses, estimates or anecdotes. The Science of the Swing will give any player or teacher powerful tools to unlock the full potential in every swing. You don't have to subscribe to a specific swing method or approach when you know how to optimize what you do with your skills and your body using fundamental physics applied to the golf swing with this cutting-edge research and technology. Michael is one one of Golf Digest's 50 Best Teachers and Golf Magazine's Top 100 Teachers in America. In 2012 Jacobs won the Metropolitan PGA Section Teacher of the Year, and in 2017 he was a keynote presenter at the PGA National Teaching and Coaching Summit. Jacobs' research partner and collaborator Dr. Steven Nesbit is a professor of mechanical engineering at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., and is the author of golf science's most authoritative movement research. In this YA novel in verse from bestselling authors Kwame Alexander and Mary Rand Hess (Solo), which Kirkus called “lively, moving, and heartfelt” in a starred review, Noah and Walt just want to leave their geek days behind and find “cool,” but in the process discover a lot about first loves, friendship, and embracing life . . . as well as why Black Lives Matter is so important for all. Best friends Noah and Walt are far from popular, but Walt is convinced junior year is their year, and he has a plan that includes wooing the girls of their dreams and becoming amazing athletes. Never mind he and Noah failed to make their baseball team yet again, and Noah’s crush since third grade, Sam, has him firmly in the friend zone. While Walt focuses on his program of jazz, podcasts, batting cages, and a “Hug Life” mentality, Noah feels stuck in status quo … until he stumbles on a stash of old love letters. Each one contains words Noah’s always wanted to say to Sam, and he begins secretly creating artwork using the lines that speak his heart. But when his art becomes public, Noah has a decision to make: continue his life in the dugout and possibly lose the girl forever, or take a swing and finally speak out. At the same time, American flags are being left around town. While some think it’s a harmless prank and others see it as a form of protest, Noah can’t shake the feeling something bigger is happening to his community. Especially after he witnesses events that hint divides and prejudices run deeper than he realized. As the personal and social tensions increase around them, Noah and Walt must decide what is really important when it comes to love, friendship, sacrifice, and fate. Why do children do the things they do? What can teachers do to manage it all? While there is not a simple method for understanding and managing all behaviors or all children, teachers can give young children the social and emotional tools needed to grow and thrive on their own. Developed and tested in the classroom, Beyond Behavior Management, is a strength-based approach to guiding and managing young children's behavior by helping them build and use essential life skills—attachment, collaboration, self-regulation, adaptability, contribution, and belonging—into the daily life of the early childhood classroom. As a result, children will learn to exhibit more pro-social behaviors, work better as a community, and become excited and active learners. This edition includes two new chapters and content reflecting early learning standards, new research, cultural diversity, and strategies to strengthen the home-school connection. Discussion and reflection questions, exercises, journal assignments, child profile templates, a planning worksheet, and sample scripts are also included. Jenna Bilmes is an early childhood consultant and an instructional designer for WestEd Child and Family Services. She is a frequent presenter to teachers, administrators, and counselors nationally and internationally.

The traditional picture of a Victorian public school assumes that it was founded on Thomas Arnold, Tom Brown’s Schooldays and Rugby football. A Rifle Corps, Oxbridge Blues on the teaching staff, and an ethos of esprit de corps were all part of the system. The cult of athleticism reigned supreme. This was not the case at Uppingham School during Edward Thring’s headmastership from 1853 to 1887. Here a balanced physical education of gymnastics, athletics, games, swimming and country pursuits flourished within a sane but revolutionary educational framework. Thring’s Uppingham, however, was an Athens surrounded by Spartan strongholds. The Spartans were kept at bay during Thring’s lifetime, but, after his death, they closed in and even claimed Thring as one of their own. His ideals were hijacked by the sportsmen and then perverted by the militarists. Thring’s theory and practice of physical education lived on outside the traditional public schools, was adopted by the progressive school movement, and eventually found acceptance in all good schools. Its legacy can be found in the first National Curriculum for Physical Education and in all schools that value physical education as a vital ingredient of holistic education. This book will inform trainee teachers, practising teachers and teacher trainers of the men and women who have strived since 1800 to secure a place for physical education in the curriculum for all pupils. Historians of education, gender, society and sport will find new material to illuminate their fields of study.
