When the First Fed. Congress convened in N.Y. City, an urgent priority of the newly formed legis. branch of the gov¿t. of the U.S. was formation of its org. It is not surprising that it was formed of two bodies, similar to those of the British Parliament. Next in order was the formulation of rules for the conduct of both of its chambers, & the selection of appropriate officials & devices to represent their authority. Following British practice once more, the new House of Rep. & the Senate appointed Sergeants-at-Arms. As symbols of the their authority, the House of Rep. adopted the mace, & the Senate used a gavel to bring the body to order. These symbols of authority are discussed in this study, which also discusses the gavel of the Amer. Philos. Soc. Ill.

"The district officer (DO) was the pivot of the British Colonial Administration throughout the British Empire, as was his counterpart in India. The DO was both administrator and magistrate; he was also the essential link with the professional and technical services and with the indigenous population - the 600 million people they served - in an empire of service rather than domination. In this book, Anthony Kirk-Greene, who was himself a distinguished member of the Nigeria Service, draws upon personal memoirs, diaries, private and official papers, and his own experience, to paint a vivid picture of the service and a never-to-be-repeated episode in British history."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

This volume examines the ways that sovereign rulers have employed well-defined symbols, attributes, and stereotypes to convey their power to their subjects and rivals, as well as to leave a legacy for subsequent generations to admire. Legendary rulers from antiquity such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, and Constantine have been looked to as models for their display of imperial power by the rulers of later eras. From medieval sovereigns such as Charlemagne and France's Louis IX to the tsars of Russia and the great European royal dynasties of the Hapsburgs, the Bourbons, and the Tudors, the rulers of each period have appropriated and often embellished the emblems of power employed by their predecessors. Even the second-tier lords who ruled parts of France and Italy during the Renaissance, such as the dukes of Burgundy, the Gonzaga of Mantua, and the Medici of Florence became adept at manipulating this imagery. The final chapter is reserved for Napoleon I, perhaps the ultimate master of symbolic display, who assumed the attributes of Roman emperors to project an image of eternal and immutable authority. The author examines not only regal paraphernalia such as crowns, scepters, thrones, and orbs, but also the painted portraits, sculptures, tapestries, carved ivories, jewelry, coins, armor, and, eventually, photographs created to display their owner's sovereign power, a vast collection of works that now forms a significant portion of the cultural heritage of Western civilization.

One of the urgent priorities of the first Federal Congress was the formation of its organization, formulation of rules for its conduct, & the selection of appropriate officials & devices to represent their authority. Following British tradition, the newly organized House of Representatives & the Senate each appointed a Sergeant-at-Arms. For its symbol of the commonality of the American people, the House adopted the mace in the tradition of its mother country, while the Senate utilized a gavel or knocker. First used during meetings in New York of the House of Representatives, the mace was destroyed by the British when they burned Washington, & it was not until 1841 that another was acquired. Over the years the mace has been used primarily to quell quarrels between Congressmen on the floor, & to bring absent House members to meetings so that a quorum could be formed. The mace has been invariably effective in bringing order among turbulent House members. Although a Sergeant at Arms served the same function in the United States Senate, he was not provided with a mace. Order was maintained by an ivory knocker or form of gavel that has been used for the purpose for almost two centuries.

Symbols have been used by secret societies since time immemorial; their power is used to control minds as they seek to transcend established laws and governments. The Illuminati is perhaps the largest secret organization in the world and while many have yet to come to terms with the reality that they are introducing a New World Order, those who have embraced the truth have made positive steps to inform others of what could mark the start of yet another dark age. Many theories have been postulated to create an illusion of a world under one government in which the Illuminati ideals form the fundamental principles of governance, application of laws and the administration of punishment. The little that is known of the Illuminati brings to the fore some commonalities. Including the fact that the Illuminati seeks to control the world by instilling fear and meting death on those perceived to be opposed to its ideals. This book illustrates how the Illuminati operates:* The mysterious circumstances under which the Illuminati was founded.* The symbols that define the Illuminati with special emphasis on meanings, and how they affect you.* An in-depth analysis of the founding families.* A new perspective of the New World Order.* Why the Illuminati prefers the media as a tool for executing its plans.
