Either you enjoy it or you don’t. It’s just that simple. Poetry is a connection to the heart and soul. A person must dive into the innermost thoughts of the writer or “poet”. Rhythm is produced in "natural" as well as "cultural" ways. Natural rhythm is not controlled by man, no more than we can control the ebb and tide of the ocean, the rising and setting of the sun, the seasons of the year, or our own life cycle, heartbeat or breathing. But what man does with his body may become a cultural fact: the way we walk, work, dance, sing, make music and decorate objects. In music, rhythm is the organization of time in units. In visual arts rhythm refers to the arrangement of regularly recurring motifs. Rhythmic cycles in the music of the Islamic world are illustrated in the correspondences between the art of sound and the other arts: poetry and musical rhythms are related to geometrical patterns and calligraphy. In South Indian music, the analogies between rhythm, woven patterns and symbolic figures are striking. Weaving patterns reveal themselves as they emerge from the loom or unfold before the discerning eye, just as a listener delights in the patterns gradually perceived by the mind, and not merely received by the ear. The symbolic meanings of motifs and colors are an expression of the relation between man and the cosmos." This Personal Improvement Project was completed with the intention of designing a curriculum that applies Bruner's (1966) enactive, iconic, symbolic sequence of instruction to teaching rhythm reading to beginning instrumentalist in a middle school band program. The curriculum includes a scope and sequence, lesson plans, explanations of how to use the lesson plans, assessments and worksheets, and reflections of the teaching experience. A pre- and post-assessment was administered to each student at the beginning and end of the school year. The assessments showed substantial student growth in reading and performing rhythmic notation. Through this project I found that the enactive, iconic, symbolic sequence of instruction was efective in teaching students the concept of rhythm. Students also appeared to be more independent in reading and performing rhythm from notation than previous classes I have taught.

This book shows how rhythm constitutes an untapped resource for understanding poetry. Intervening in recent debates over formalism, historicism, and poetics, the authors show how rhythm is at once a defamiliarizing aesthetic force and an unstable concept. Distinct from the related terms to which it’s often assimilated—scansion, prosody, meter—rhythm makes legible a range of ways poetry affects us that cannot be parsed through the traditional resources of poetic theory. Rhythm has rich but also problematic roots in still-lingering nineteenth-century notions of primitive, oral, communal, and sometimes racialized poetics. But there are reasons to understand and even embrace its seductions, including its resistance to lyrical voice and even identity. Through exploration of rhythm’s genealogies and present critical debates, the essays consistently warn against taking rhythm to be a given form offering ready-made resources for interpretation. Pressing beyond poetry handbooks’ isolated descriptions of technique or inductive declarations of what rhythm “is,” the essays ask what it means to think rhythm. Rhythm, the contributors show, happens relative to the body, on the one hand, and to language, on the other—two categories that are distinct from the literary, the mode through which poetics has tended to be analyzed. Beyond articulating what rhythm does to poetry, the contributors undertake a genealogical and theoretical analysis of how rhythm as a human experience has come to be articulated through poetry and poetics. The resulting work helps us better understand poetry both on its own terms and in its continuities with other experiences and other arts.
