These Proceedings of a NATO-ARW (HTECH ARW 97 1843) held at the Oreanda Hotel, Yalta, Ukraine from April 29 till May 2 , 1998 resulted from many discussions between various workers, concerning the need for a gathering of all (if possible) who were concerned with the subject of symmetry of the order parameter and pairing states for superconductivity. We applied ourselves in particular to High critical Temperature Superconductors (HTS), but also studied other unconventional superconductors. The study of HTS is one of the most prominent research subjects in solid state sciences. The understanding of the role of symmetry and pairing conditions are also thought to be necessary before technological applications since these features may be influenced by external fields. The workshop discussions have touched upon theoretical and experimental aspects, but also on related topics. These served as initiators for a very great amount of discussions with many comments from the audience. More than thirty "long lectures" and one on going "poster session" were held. Private discussions went unrecorded but obviously took place at many locations : lecture halls, staircases, cafes, bedrooms, bars, beach, bus, plane... Arguments openly reported for the first time were often quite sharp ones, -and this is an understatement.

The object of this book is the quantum mechanism that allows the macroscopic quantum coherence of a superconducting condensate to resist to the attacks of high temperature. Solution to this fundamental problem of modern physics is needed for the design of room temperature superconductors, for controlling the decoherence effects in the quantum computers and for the understanding of a possible role of quantum coherence in living matter that is debated today in quantum biophysics. The recent experimental results on nanoscale phase separation and the two component scenario in high Tc in doped cuprate and the lower symmetry in the superconducting elements at high pressure area presented. The compelling evidence for multiband superconductivity in MgB2 that provides the simplest system for testing the high Tc theories, and plays the same role as atomic hydrogen for the development of the quantum mechanics in the twenties, is one of the main points of the book. The multiband superconductivity enhances the critical temperature from the low Tc range Tc

Unconventional superconductors provide, today, some of the most fundamental challenges in condensed-matter physics, besides their unimaginable potential for applications. Here, we will discuss two of these materials. Firstly, we will focus on Sr2RuO4, one of the most promising candidates to exhibit chiral pwave superconductivity, analogously to a two-dimensional (2D) film of 3 He-A. Some of the outstanding challenges regarding this multi-band superconductor remain, including the knowledge of which band(s) are primarily responsible for the appearance of superconductivity. Solving this issue will help us understand the symmetry of the pairing and, eventually, the pairing mechanism. We report scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) studies confirming a nodal superconducting gap structure and indicating that the quasi-one-dimensional (1D) bands are most important for superconductivity in Sr2RuO4. We suggest an experimental avenue to confirm this observation and determine the pairing symmetry beyond doubt. We then turn to a discussion of the hole-doped cuprate high-temperature superconductors, with a focus on their mysterious pseudogap regime and its Q = 0 and Q 0 electronic broken symmetries. Development of novel spectroscopic imaging STM (SI-STM) techniques allowed the quantitative measurement of such broken symmetries (also seen by other probes) and their inter-relations. We report on these novel techniques in detail, in particular Fourier phase determination of STM data, and study extensively the hole doping, p, dependence of the broken symmetries as well as the Fermi surface topology for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O+[delta] samples spanning the phase diagram between 0.06 [LESS-THAN OR EQUAL TO] p [LESS-THAN OR EQUAL TO] 0.23. We show that the electronic symmetry breaking tendencies weaken with increasing p and disappear close to pc = 0.19. Concomitantly, the coherent k-space topology undergoes an abrupt transition, from arcs to closed contours, at the same pc . These data reveal that the k-space topology transformation in the cuprates is linked intimately with the disappearance of the electronic symmetry breaking at a concealed critical point.

Since the discovery in 1986 of high temperature superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller, a considerable progress has been made and several important scientific problems have emerged. Within this NATO Advanced Study Institute our intention was to focus mainly on the controversial topic of the symmetry of the superconducting gap and given the very short coherence length, the role of fluctuations. The Institute on ‘The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High- Superconductors’ took place in the “Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse” in Corsica, France, between 1 - 13 September 1997. The 110 participantsfrom 18 countries (yet 30 nationalities) including 23 full time lecturers, have spent two memorable weeks in this charming Mediterranean resort. All lecturers were asked to prepare pedagogical papers to clearly present the central physical idea behind specific model or experiment. The better understanding of physics of high temperature superconductivity is certainly needed to guide the development of applications of these materials in high and weak current devices.

Quasi One Dimensional Organic Superconductors written by Zhang Wei and has been published by World Scientific this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-22 with Science categories.

The book includes a thorough description of a wide range of physical properties of organic superconductors of reduced dimensionality. The authors start with an overview of the field followed by a background discussion and selected experimental topics. A critical discussion of theoretical proposals is presented under the constraints of experimental observations and exciting possibilities for the symmetry of the order parameter are presented, including the cases of inhomogeneous superconducting states and triplet superconductivity. The possible origins of Cooper pairing are explored and tests to detect experimentally the pairing symmetry are described in detail. The book ends with a discussion of important open questions, where the search for their answers will keep the field alive for the next decade.

Unconventional superconductivity (or superconductivity with a nontrivial Cooper pairing) is believed to exist in many heavy-fermion materials as well as in high temperature superconductors, and is a subject of great theoretical and experimental interest. The remarkable progress achieved in this field has not been reflected in published monographs and textbooks, and there is a gap between current research and the standard education of solid state physicists in the theory of superconductivity. This book is intended to meet this information need and includes the authors' original results.

This book offers a comprehensive summary of experiments that are especially suited to reveal the order-parameter symmetry of unconventional superconductors. It briefly introduces readers to the basic theoretical concepts and terms of unconventional superconductivity, followed by a detailed overview of experimental techniques and results investigating the superconducting energy gap and phase, plus the pairing symmetry. This review includes measurements of specific heat, thermal conductivity, penetration depth and nuclearmagnetic resonance and muon-spin rotation experiments. Further, point-contact and tunnelling spectroscopy and Josephson experiments are addressed. Current understanding is reviewed from the experimental point of view. With an appendix offering five tables with almost 200 references that summarize the present results from ambient pressure heavy-fermion and noncopper-oxide superconductors, the monograph provides a valuable resource for further studies in this field.

In this thesis I present measurements of bimetallic Pb-Au-YBCO dc SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices) and Josephson junctions that provide an important clue to the origin of the pairing mechanism for high temperature superconductivity in the cuprates. By probing the momentum space anisotropy of the phase of the superconducting order parameter, we can experimentally determine the symmetry of the superconducting pairing state in YBCO and distinguish between the leading candidate states that have been proposed. We find that the superconducting order parameter in YBCO changes sign between orthogonal directions in momentum space, unlike the isotropic order parameter in conventional superconductors. The sign change of the order parameter is consistent with a $dsb{xsp2-ysp2}$ pairing state symmetry.

Superconductivity in materials without inversion symmetry in the respective crystal structures occurs in the presence of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling as a consequence of an emerging electric field gradient. The superconducting condensate is then a superposition of spin-singlet and spin-triplet Cooper pairs. This scenario accounts for various experimental findings such as nodes in the superconducting gap or extremely large upper critical magnetic fields. Spin-triplet pairing can occur in non-centrosymmetric superconductors in spite of Anderson’s theorem that spin-triplet pairing requires a crystal structure that exhibits inversion symmetry. This book, authored and edited by leading researchers in the field, is both an introduction to and overview on this exciting branch of novel superconductors. Its self-contained and tutorial style makes it particularly suitable for self-study and as source of teaching material for special seminars and courses. At the same time it constitutes an up-to-date and authoritative reference for anyone working in this exciting field.
