Honoring Mozart and Haydn, Beethoven's First Symphony is a relatively conservative work from an otherwise bold composer. Despite its classical scoring and form, the symphony is uniquely Beethoven, with characteristic sforzandi, sudden shifts in tonal centers, and a prominent use of winds. Beethoven began his first sketches for a symphony in C Major in 1795, but soon thereafter turned his attention to composing works for piano. Sketches for the finale were found in the counterpoint exercises Beethoven wrote while studying with Georg Albrechtsberger in 1797, but it was not until 1799, a year after completing the Pathétique Sonata, that Beethoven fully turned his attention to composing his First Symphony. He completed the work in early 1800 and conducted the first performance on April 2nd of that year at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Also included in the program was an unidentified Mozart symphony and selections from Haydn's The Creation, Beethoven's Septet, Op. 20, and an unidentified piano concerto performed and composed by Beethoven. John Knowles Paines Symphony No. 2 (Spring) was first performed in March 1880 and was published in full score and parts by Arthur P. Schmidt later that year. His earlier Symphony No. 1, premiered in 1876, had shown a rather strict support for Beethovens classicism, but the Spring symphony exhibits a richer chromatic vocabulary, colorful orchestration, and Paines first use of thematic transformation in an orchestral work. The composer attached programmatic titles to each of the four movements, although these were not stressed in the earliest performancesand did not appear in the published scorefor fear of criticism from Bostons conservative music community opposed to program music. But concert programs from 1888 onwards included the titles. The present edition corrects many errors from the original published score and makes available an excellent example of Paines mature style, reportedly his favorite among his orchestral works. Volume IV The Second Golden Age of the Viennese Symphony Brahms, Bruckner, Dvorák, Mahler, and Selected Contemporaries Although during the mid-19th century the geographic center of the symphony in the Germanic territories moved west and north from Vienna to Leipzig, during the last third of the century it returned to the old Austrian lands with the works of Brahms, Bruckner, Dvorák, and Mahler. After nearly a half century in hibernation, the sleeping Viennese giant awoke to what some viewed as a reincarnation of Beethoven with the first hearing of Brahms's Symphony No. 1, which was premiered at Vienna in December 1876. Even though Bruckner had composed some gigantic symphonies prior to Brahms's first contribution, their full impact was not felt until the composer's complete texts became available after World War II. Although Dvorák was often viewed as a nationalist composer, in his symphonic writing his primary influences were Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. For both Bruckner and Mahler, the symphony constituted the heart of their output; for Brahms and Dvorák, it occupied a less central place. Yet for all of them, the key figure of the past remained Beethoven. The symphonies of these four composers, together with the works of Goldmark, Zemlinsky, Schoenberg, Berg, Smetana, Fibich, Janácek, and others are treated in Volume IV, The Second Golden Age of the Viennese Symphony, covering the period from roughly 1860 to 1930.
