Excerpt from Synopsis of the Species of Insects Belonging to the Family of Phasmidae Having been recently led to study the singular and interesting family of Orthopterous Insects, termed Phasmidae, in order to elucidate the characters of the sixteen species described in the first part of my 'Entomology of Australia, ' I have been induced to arrange the materials collected for that purpose in the form of an Essay, the object of which is to present a complete list of all the recorded insects belonging to the family, and to embrace at the same time descriptions of a considerable number of new forms which have fallen under my observation. The result of my researches may form a not uninteresting addition to the small stock of knowledge at present possessed by entomologists with regard to this striking but neglected group. Of the extent of this knowledge, and its gradual development, some idea may be formed from the following outline of what has been written upon the subject since the days of Linnaeus, who first placed these insects in the genus Gryllus, but afterwards removed them to that of Mantis. In this latter mode of arrangement he was followed by Gmelin, and by Fabricius in his earlier publications; but in the year 1787, Stoll, in his 'Representations exactement coloriees dapres Nature des Spectres, ' &c, proposed to form the Spectres into a distinct family (genus) from Mantis. To this genus, in the commencement of his work, he gave the name of Spectrum: at the end, however, he gave a list of the species figured by him from various Dutch collections, and amounting in number to 27, with Latin specific names, to which he prefixed the generic appellation of Phasma. He divided the genus thus formed into two families, characterized as follows: "1.Les pieds anterieurs plus longs que les posterieurs; le corps tout a fait cylindrique. "2.Le corps plat; les pieds anterieurs plus courts que les posterieurs. Dans quelques especes les femellesont les etuis aussi longs que les ailes. Excerpt from Revision of the Tachinidae of America North of Mexico: A Family of Parasitic Two-Winged Insects Sir I have the honor to submit for publication the seventh of the technical series of bulletins of this Division. It has been prepared by Mr. D. W. Coquillett, of the office force, and consists of a revision of the species of the parasitic ies belonging to the family Tachinidaa, which occur in the United States and Canada. The desirability of such a revision of these economically important ies has been apparent to all workers in economic as well as systematic entomology for many years. They are among the most important enemies of many of our most injurious insects, and their characters are so obscure that workers have had the greatest difficulty in separating one species from another, and the result is that the literature of economic entomology in par ticular contains many wrong determinations and absolute misstate ments based upon such erroneous names. During the last eighteen years many species of Tachinidze have been reared at this office from injurious insects which were being studied. It has been heretofore impossible to record the results of these rearings, on account of the confusion which existed in this family, and in its original conception this study of the group was undertaken in order to enable us to record the results of this biologic work. The records are now given in the shape of two tables - one of parasites and hosts and the other of hosts and parasites - and a glance at these tables will be instantly couvin cing as to the important and beneficial role which these insects play. With the clear and systematic diagnoses of the genera and species which. Mr. Coquillett has prepared, any economic entomologist should be able to determine just what species of Tachina ies are assisting him in his work against injurious insects. Australia has a rich diversity of phasmids – otherwise known as stick and leaf insects. Most of them are endemic, few have been studied and new species continue to be found. Stick insects are, by far, Australia’s longest insects – some of them reach up to 300 mm in body length, or more than half a metre if you include their outstretched legs. Many stick insects are very colourful, and some have quite elaborate, defensive behaviour. Increasingly they are being kept as pets. This is the first book on Australian phasmids for nearly 200 years and covers all known stick and leaf insects. It includes photographs of all species, notes on their ecology and biology as well as identification keys suitable for novices or professionals.

Entomology written by Cedric Gillott and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-27 with Science categories.

Gillott’s thorough yet clear writing style continues to keep Entomology near the top of the class as a text for senior undergraduates, and for graduate students and professionals seeking an introduction to specific entomological topics. The author’s long-held belief that an introductory entomology course should present a balanced treatment of the subject is reflected in the continued arrangement of the book in four sections: Evolution and Diversity, Anatomy and Physiology, Reproduction and Development, and Ecology. For the third edition, all chapters have been updated. This includes not only the addition of new information and concepts but also the reduction or exclusion of material no longer considered "mainstream", so as to keep the book at a reasonable size. Based on exciting discoveries made during the previous decade, the topics of insect evolutionary relationships, semiochemicals, gas exchange, immune responses (including those of parasites and parasitoids), flight, and the management of pests have received particular attention in the preparation of the third edition. Overall, more than 30 new or significantly revised figures have been incorporated.

A Guide To Australian Moths written by Paul Zborowski and has been published by CSIRO PUBLISHING this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-05-18 with Science categories.

Moths are often thought of as the ugly cousins of butterflies, yet their colours can be just as remarkable and, with over 20,000 species in Australia, their biology and lifestyles are far more diverse. With striking colour photographs of live moths in their natural habitat, this guide illustrates all the major moth families in Australia, including some rarely seen species. It provides many curious facts about the unusual aspects of moth biology, including details on day-flying species, camouflage, moths that mimic wasps, larvae with stinging hairs, and larvae that have gills. This easy-to-read book includes sections on the iconic Witjuti grubs, Bogong moths, the giant-tailed Hercules moths of northern Queensland (one of the largest moths in the world, with a wingspan of over 25 cm), moths that release hydrocyanic acid in their defence, and moths that produce ultrasonic calls that bats learn to associate with a bad taste. A Guide to Australian Moths highlights the environmental role of moths, their relationships with other animals and plants, and their importance to humans. It provides a unique introduction to the extraordinary diversity of moths found in Australia.
