La présente étude de système de légitimation institue par la monarchie marocaine tendra à démontrer le rôle fondamental joue par la tradition. Celle-ci parait comme la pierre angulaire de tout le système politique du Maroc. En même temps qu'elle consacre la primauté de la monarchie alaouite et plus particulièrement de la personne du roi, sur toutes les autres institutions politiques, elle permet une régulation originale et jusqu'ici efficace du champ politique. La première partie de la thèse est consacrée à l'analyse historique des fondements de la légitimité islamique qui constitue la charpente essentielle du système établi par la monarchie. À partir de l'expérience fondatrice inaugurée par le prophète Mohammed à Médine et poursuivie par les quatre premiers califes dits "biens dirigés" rashidun s'imposera une vision impérieuse selon laquelle la communauté des croyants (oumma) ne peut s'accomplir que dans la restitution et la fidélité du modelé politique de Médine. Dans la deuxieme partie, on relèvera d'abord que la légitimation traditionnelle ne procède pas d'une structure sociale foncièrement traditionnelle mais qu'elle serait plutôt le produit d'un rapport du pouvoir politique surdéveloppe à une société en mutation marquée par la fragmentation sociale. L'essentiel de l'analyse portera ensuite sur les mécanismes assurant la légitimation de la monarchie actuelle. A partir de la tradition du sultanat marocain qui combine les deux systèmes de légitimation islamique shi'ite et sunnite, s'établit une concentration du pouvoir religieux et partant politique entre les mains d'un monarque, sultan, roi et Amir Al-Muminin (commandeur des croyants). Cette tradition alliant la Bay'a (serment d'allégeance) et la légitimité intrinsèque attachée à la personne du roi sera le moyen de surmonter la contradiction entre le contenu absolutiste de la monarchie et sa forme "constitutionnelle". Aussi, grâce à la tradition, la monarchie s'assure une totale maitrise d'un champ politico-religieux hiérarchisé et relativement clos.

Ce livre s'attache à analyser les usages que le Maroc fait de l'islam dans sa politique étrangère.
