Repräsentation ist zentraler Terminus politischer Wissenschaft und Strukturmerkmal demokratischer Verfassungen im liberalen Sinn. Aus einer konstruktivistischen Perspektive identifiziert Thorsten Schlee Muster der Repräsentation und zeigt deren Unhintergehbarkeit auf. Man mag sich über die Konstellation repräsentativer Demokratien wundern: In ihnen bestellt der demokratische Bürger einen Vertreter, der ihm Befehle geben soll. Der politischen Theorie verlangt es einiges an argumentativem Geschick ab, dieses eigenartige Arrangement plausibel zu machen. In den Auseinandersetzungen um die angemessene Form der Demokratie zeichnen sich spezifische Muster der Repräsentation ab, die tief im Selbstverständnis westlicher Demokratien verankert sind. Weder den Phantasmen demokratischer Authentizität, noch den Versuchen der Auflösung des Politischen im Sozialen gelingt es, Muster der Repräsentation zu tilgen.
