The System of National Accounts , 1993 (SNA) was a joint publication by the United Nations Statistical Division, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, Eurostat and the OECD. It provides a detailed framework for producing national accounts statistics and is intended for worldwide use. However, Because of the detailed nature of the SNA, it is often difficult to identify precise definitions of the terms commonly used in national accounting. As a result, the OECD has now produced this glossary which provides a quick reference to terms commonly found in the national accounts.

The 1993 SNA represents a major advance in national accounting. While updating and clarifying the 1968 SNA, the 1993 SNA provides the basis for improving compilation of national accounts statistics, promoting integration of economic and related statistics, and enhancing analysis of economic developments. The 1993 SNA deals more clearly with relationships between economic flows (such as production, income, savings, accumulation, and financing) and links between these flows and stocks. At the same time the 1993 SNA reflects the many significant developments that have taken place in financial markets and completes the integration of balance sheets into the system. The 1993 SNA also suggests how satellite accounts (e.g. environmental accounts) and alternative classifications (e.g., through social accounting matrices) an be used to augment the central framework of the system.

National income estimates date back to the late 17th century, but only in the half-century since the Second World War have economic accounts developed in their present form, becoming an indispensable tool for macroeconomic analysis, projections and policy formulation. This paper analyzes the evolution of national accounts statistics compilation practices over the period of 2018 to 2021 for 189 economies. This is useful information for monitoring the quality of national accounts statistics and supporting identification of areas for improvement. Economies can use this data to benchmark their practices to the region and the world. Many economies have made strides in implementing 2008 SNA to better reflect the size and structure of the economy however, there hasn’t been an assessment on how quick the migration is. With the new 2025 SNA vintage on the horizon, it was imperative to check how many economies are using the 2008 SNA vintage as it will provide a clue to how fast authorities will migrate to the new framework. We found that 31 economies have moved to the 2008 SNA between 2018 and 2021. The paper also examined how many economies started compiling quarterly GDP during the period 2018 and 2021.
