Globally, mental health problems remain as one of the largest contributors to the population burden of diseases. According to WHO, common mental disorders, including depression and anxiety, affect the health of about 9% of the world’s population and account for over 10% of the total years lived with disability. In many parts of the world, the number of people with mental health disorders has been increasing, fueled by a rapid population growth and aging, as well as urbanization and immigration. It is estimated that 80% of these non-fatal diseases occurred in low and middle income countries. However, in such settings, coverage of both preventive and curative services is still very limited. Diversity in socio-cultural backgrounds and limited capacity of local health care systems are emphasizing the importance of systematic approaches to understanding and intervening in the issue. Although the social, economic and health burden of mental health issues are substantial, effectiveness of policies and interventions is varied across regions and largely driven by contextual factors. Evidence-based prevention and treatment approaches involve the synthesis of epidemiological surveys, assessment of clinical populations (e.g chronic medical diseases, chronic psychiatric illnesses) and studies exploring the role of biological markers in psychiatric illnesses. This Research Topic aims to introduce the latest research findings on the application of system-thinking in Mental Health Care and Promotion

This international survey defines mental health as a basic human right, and tracks the emergence of mental health prevention and promotion as a global priority. Locating mental illness within a cycle of negative causes and effects affecting human quality of life, the editors identify modern policy barriers to promotion/prevention initiatives, particularly the favoring of the biomedical health model by major stakeholders. The book’s selection of successful programs from diverse countries displays a lifespan approach, emphasizing the centrality of interdisciplinary educational settings in providing primary and secondary prevention and promotion interventions, and the ongoing fight against missing financial investigations, discrimination and stigma. Together, these papers make a forceful argument for rights- based responses to worldwide mental health needs as part of the commitment toward global human rights and long-term development goals. Included in the coverage: · Mental health priorities around the world. · Social determinants of mental health. · Mental health and stigma: aspects of anti-stigma interventions. · Promoting social and emotional wellbeing and responding to mental health problems in schools. · The promotion and delivery of mental health services in primary care settings. · Economic evaluation of mental health promotion and mental illness prevention. Bringing to the fore public health concerns that are too often marginalized, Global Mental Health is necessary reading for health professionals, health and clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, medical sociologists, and policymakers.

A health-promoting school (HPS) approach was introduced over 25 years ago and has been promoted globally since; however, the aspiration of a fully embedded, sustainable HPS system has not yet been achieved, and very few countries have implemented and sustained the approach at scale. This publication is based on an extensive review of global evidence on the barriers to and enablers of implementation, maintenance and scaling-up of the health-promoting school approach. Its aim is to guide adaptation and implementation of the global standards for HPS. National and subnational stakeholders in all sectors involved in identifying, planning, funding, implementing, monitoring and evaluating the HPS approach will find this publication useful for understanding: what should be done, how it should be done and who should be involved in making every school a health-promoting school.

Most health professionals would agree that time and funds are in short supply, even under optimal conditions. Patients, too, would admit similar shortfalls, even with optimal motivation. This book offers self-administered and easily administered interventions designed to promote positive health behaviors while requiring little or no outside funding. Editor Luciano L’Abate continues his long tradition of prolific innovations by identifying major changes in today’s health care systems and explaining how targeted, prescriptive promotion/prevention strategies can enhance traditional primary, secondary, and tertiary interventions in key behavioral and relational areas.
