Mainstream textbooks explain how electronic circuits work, but cover very little on how to conceive them. That is the aim of this monograph, namely to show readers how they can determine currents, channel lengths and widths of CMOS circuits, so as to optimally satisfy design specifications of electronic circuits. The idea underlying the methodology described in this monograph consists in the use of a set of Lookup Tables embodying device data extracted from systematic runs done using an advanced circuit simulator, the same as used for final design verifications. In this way, all parameters put to use during the sizing procedure incorporate not only the bearings of bias conditions and geometry, but also every second-order effect present in the simulator's model, in particular short-channel effects. Consequently, the number of verification simulations one has to perform is not only substantially reduced, but the designer may concentrate on actual design strategies without being bothered by inconsistencies caused by poor models or inappropriate parameters. This monograph will be of use to engineers and researchers who work on the design of electronic circuits and systems.

Cheung and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-03-14 with Technology & Engineering categories.
In Design of Low-Voltage CMOS Switched-Opamp Switched-Capacitor Systems, the emphasis is put on the design and development of advanced switched-opamp architectures and techniques for low-voltage low-power switched-capacitor (SC) systems. Specifically, the book presents a novel multi-phase switched-opamp technique together with new system architectures that are critical in improving significantly the performance of switched-capacitor systems at low supply voltages: *A generic fast-settling double-sampling SC biquadratic filter architecture is proposed to achieve high-speed operation for SC circuits. *A low-voltage double-sampling (DS) finite-gain-compensation (FGC) technique is employed to realize high-resolution SD modulator using only low-DC-gain opamps to maximize the speed and to reduce power dissipation. *A family of novel power-efficient SC filters and SD modulators are built based on using only half-delay SC integrators. *Single-opamp-based SCsystems are designed for ultra-low-power applications. In addition, on the circuit level, a fast-switching methodology is proposed for the design of the switchable opamps to achieve switching frequency up to 50 MHz at 1V, which is improved by about ten times compared to the prior arts. Finally, detailed design considerations, architecture choices, and circuit implementation of five chip prototypes are presented to illustrate potential applications of the proposed multi-phase switched-opamp technique to tackle with and to achieve different stringent design corners such as high-speed, high-integration-level and ultra-low-power consumption at supply voltages of 1V or lower in standard CMOS processes.

Static and Dynamic Performance Limitations for High Speed D/A Converters discusses the design and implementation of high speed current-steering CMOS digital-to-analog converters. Starting from the definition of the basic specifications for a D/A converter, the elements determining the static and dynamic performance are identified. Different guidelines based on scientific derivations are suggested to optimize this performance. Furthermore, a new closed formula has been derived to account for the influence of the transistor mismatch on the achievable resolution of the current-steering D/A converter. To allow a thorough understanding of the dynamic behavior, a new factor has been introduced. Moreover, the frequency dependency of the output impedance introduces harmonic distortion components which can limit the maximum attainable spurious free dynamic range. Finally, the last part of the book gives an overview on different existing transistor mismatch models and the link with the static performance of the D/A converter.

This book introduces the origin of biomedical signals and the operating principles behind them and introduces the characteristics of common biomedical signals for subsequent signal measurement and judgment. Since biomedical signals are captured by wearable devices, sensor devices, or implanted devices, these devices are all battery-powered to maintain long working time. We hope to reduce their power consumption to extend service life, especially for implantable devices, because battery replacement can only be done through surgery. Therefore, we must understand how to design low-power integrated circuits. Both implantable and in-vitro medical signal detectors require two basic components to collect and transmit biomedical signals: an analog-to-digital converter and a frequency synthesizer because these measured biomedical signals are wirelessly transmitted to the relevant receiving unit. The core unit of wireless transmission is the frequency synthesizer, which provides a wide frequency range and stable frequency to demonstrate the quality and performance of the wireless transmitter. Therefore, the basic operating principle and model of the frequency synthesizer are introduced. We also show design examples and measurement results of a low-power low-voltage integer-N frequency synthesizer for biomedical applications. The detection of biomedical signals needs to be converted into digital signals by an analog-to-digital converter to facilitate subsequent signal processing and recognition. Therefore, the operating principle of the analog-to-digital converter is introduced. We also show implementation examples and measurement results of low-power low-voltage analog-to-digital converters for biomedical applications.

Design of Wireless Autonomous Dataloggers IC's reveals the state of the art in the design of complex dataloggers, with a special focus on low power consumption. The emphasis is on autonomous dataloggers for stand-alone applications with remote reprogrammability. The book starts with a comprehensive introduction on the most important design aspects and trade-offs for miniaturized low-power telemetric dataloggers. After the general introduction follows an in-depth case study of an autonomous CMOS datalogger IC for the registration of in vivo loads on oral implants. After tackling the design of the datalogger on the system level, the design of the different building blocks is elaborated in detail, with emphasis on low power. A clear overview of the operation, the implementation, and the most important design considerations of the building blocks to achieve optimal system performance is given. Design of Wireless Autonomous Dataloggers IC's discusses the design of correlated double sampling amplifiers and sample-and-holds, binary-weighted current steering DACs, successive approximation ADCs and relaxation clock oscillators and can also be used as a manual for the design of these building blocks. Design of Wireless Autonomous Dataloggers IC's covers the complete design flow of low-power miniaturized autonomous dataloggers with a bi-directional wireless link and on-board data processing, while providing detailed insight into the most critical design issues of the different building blocks. It will allow you to design complex dataloggers faster. It is essential reading for analog design engineers and researchers in the field of miniaturized dataloggers and is also suitable as a text for an advanced course on the subject.
