Humans are composed of poetic tissues as surely as physical ones. Our identities, worldviews, longings--all are drawn and developed from the unique relationships and texts we encounter and incorporate. We collect and imagine stories and creatively build them into the tale of ourselves. But each of these personal mythologies is irrevocably lost at death--unless it is true, as Christianity claims, that God raises the dead. Systematic Mythology: Imagining the Invisible studies the ways in which we make meaning. It argues that God must be the ultimate subject of every person's essential myth, so that Christ may redeem and resurrect our stories as well as our bodies. Systematic mythology calls us to consciously and creatively participate in the story God is telling through our cosmos and its inhabitants: a story in which Christ is all, and in all.

Excerpt from Greek and Roman Mythology While familiarity with classical mythology is generally recognized as essential to the understanding of literature and art and to the preservation of a great and valuable part of our artistic and spiritual heritage, the method of assuring such a familiarity to the rising generation differs in different schools. In many the stories of the gods and heroes are read in the lower grades from one or another of the children's books based on the myths, and any further knowledge of the subject depends upon the study of Vergil and other Latin or Greek writers and on the use of reference books in connection with reading in English literature. In many schools, however, experience has proved that as even the most elementary knowledge of mythology gained in childhood cannot be presupposed, and as the knowledge gained from the occasional use of reference books is unsubstantial and unsatisfactory, a systematic course in mythology for students of highs-school age is necessary. Excerpt from Greek and Roman Mythology: Based on Steuding's Griechische Und Römische Mythologie In adapting Steuding's Griechische and Romische Mythologie to the needs of American students, two aims have been kept steadily in view: first, that the genesis and development of the myths should be clearly set forth; secondly, that the text should be supplemented by a generous supply of references to some of the most useful literary passages illustrative of the subjects in hand. Therein lie whatever claims this little book has to a place among the various attractive text-books that have recently appeared upon the same subject. It is not a dictionary, perhaps not even a reference book; but rather an attempt to furnish within small compass a consistent and systematic exposition of the development of mythology and religion among the Greeks and Romans. Stories of gods, heroes and monsters permeated discourses of national selfhood in the nineteenth century. During this tumultuous time, Europe’s modern nations arose from the misty waters of long-forgotten national pasts – or so was the perception at the time. Each embedded in their particular national and political contexts, towering cultural figures – N.F.S. Grundtvig, Jacob Grimm, Jonás Halgrímsson, William Morris, Adam Oehlenschläger and many more – were catalysts for the formation of national discourses of belonging, built upon the mythological story-worlds of Europe’s non-classical vernacular pasts. This interdisciplinary book offers new perspectives on the uses of pre-Christian mythologies in the formation of national communities in nineteenth-century Northern and Western Europe. Through theoretical articles and case studies, it puts forth new understandings of how cultural thinkers across Europe utilized pre-Christian mythologies as symbolic resources in the forging of national communities. Perceptions of national identity were thus shaped, many of which are still at play today.
