From the early 1790s until after the turn of the century, a very productive but also controversial exchange took place between Reinhold and Fichte. Though many key aspects of post-Kantian philosophy were discussed, the philosophical confrontation between Reinhold and Fichte is most instructive for the understanding of post-Kantian philosophy. The exchange started when Fichte published his verdict on Reinhold's Elementarphilosophie and disapproved of its fundamental principle. In 1794 Fichte challenged Reinhold by presenting his Wissenschaftslehre. Reinhold was not convinced of Fichte's foundation of philosophy at first, but announced that he accepted the Wissenschaftslehre in 1797. While Reinhold and Fichte officially collaborated in the following three years, tensions concerning fundamental questions were still present. When Reinhold adopted Rational Realism, his relation to Fichte deteriorated and the exchange between the two finally ended. The contributions in the present collection focus on the central systematic issues at the different stages of the confrontation between Fichte and Reinhold, thereby illuminating questions that are essential to the understanding of the evolution of post-Kantian German philosophy.

Mit Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi (1743-1819) ist einer der prominentesten und auch gegenwärtig interessantesten Repräsentanten der klassischen deutschen Philosophie zu entdecken. Wie »ein Donnerschlag vom blauen Himmel herunter« (Hegel) begann das mit der großen Auseinandersetzung um die Philosophie Spinozas, dessen Aufstieg zu einem Klassiker der Philosophie wir Jacobi verdanken. Es setzte sich fort mit der Debatte um die kritische Philosophie Kants, die Jacobi folgerichtig und mit wiederum größter Resonanz im Streit mit Fichte und Schelling weiterführte. Nicht nur in deren Werk hinterließen diese Debatten tiefe Spuren. Auch die Philosophie Hegels ist ohne Jacobis Anstöße gar nicht denkbar, wie Hegel selbst vielfach bezeugt. Als »mit Kant gleichzeitiger Reformator in der Philosophie« (Fichte) ist Jacobi die graue Eminenz der Epoche. Dennoch passte Jacobi offenbar nicht ins philosophiegeschichtliche Raster, das im 19. Jh. im Milieu einer zusehends akademisch professionalisierten Philosophie entstand. Dafür ist sein Werk zu widerspenstig und zu provozierend. Inzwischen ist Jacobi aber kein Geheimtipp mehr: Seine Werke liegen vollständig in einer kritischen Edition vor und die Edition seines Briefwechsels, des reichsten philosophischen Korrespondenzcorpus der Epoche, schreitet voran. Birgit Sandkaulens Darstellung, die anlässlich des 200. Todestags Jacobis im März 2019 erscheint, entfaltet im ersten Teil »Leitmotive« der Philosophie Jacobis, während im zweiten Teil die zahlreichen Bezüge diskutiert werden, die im Fokus der Auseinandersetzung mit Jacobi zu zentralen Werken Fichtes, Schellings und Hegels führen.

Reden über die moralische Vollkommenheit und die Liebe Gottes gehören zum Kernbestand christlicher Theologie. Was aber sind die freiheitstheoretischen Bedingungen solcher Aussagen? In exemplarischen Studien zu Wilhelm von Ockham, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling und Hermann Krings zeigt diese Arbeit, dass aufgrund der Nachwirkung neuplatonischer Denkfiguren ein freiheitliches Vermögen Gottes zum moralisch Guten zwar behauptet, jedoch nicht gedacht wird. Denkbar wird dies erst dann, wenn man Gott auch ein Vermögen zum Bösen unterstellt. Soll der Begriff göttlicher Freiheit nicht äquivok zum Begriff menschlicher Freiheit bestimmt werden, ist diese Einsicht theologisch umzusetzen.
