We are all familiar with the popular and academic analyses of the ongoing and future ascent of China. Two of the associated questions are whether and when China might succeed the United States as the lead state in the world system. These are interesting questions, albeit ones that are not likely to be answered in the immediate future. An alternative focus examines instead periods of systemic transition - eras in which it is conceivable that a new leader might emerge at the expense of an older system leader. Framing the question this way presumes that a) future systemic transitions remain a possibility and b) transitions do not occur abruptly but may require several decades to set up structural situations in which a transition might take place. Neither of these assumptions are carved in stone and are open to question. It may be that future systemic transitions are unlikely. Or, it may be that they will not occur as they have in the past. All of these possibilities are assessed from a variety of different perspectives.

China's continuing rapid economic growth and expanding involvement in global affairs pose major implications for the power structure of the international system. To more accurately and fully assess the significance of China's emergence for the United States and the global community, it is necessary to gain a more complete understanding of Chinese security thought and behavior. This study addresses such questions as: What are China's most fundamental national security objectives? How has the Chinese state employed force and diplomacy in the pursuit of these objectives over the centuries? What security strategy does China pursue today and how will it evolve in the future? The study asserts that Chinese history, the behavior of earlier rising powers, and the basic structure and logic of international power relations all suggest that, although a strong China will likely become more assertive globally, this possibility is unlikely to emerge before 2015-2020 at the earliest. To handle this situation, the study argues that the United States should adopt a policy of realistic engagement with China that combines efforts to pursue cooperation whenever possible; to prevent, if necessary, the acquisition by China of capabilities that would threaten America's core national security interests; and to remain prepared to cope with the consequences of a more assertive China.

Cities, the world over, are increasingly recognised to be both a principal source of the environmental and social sustainability challenges facing contemporary society and a critical site for addressing these challenges. This authored brief discusses how to conceptualize the socio-material complexity of contested energy spaces in the Canadian North, specifically in the context of indigenous communities that have allowed industrial developments to occur on their lands despite the environmental and lifestyle consequences. By applying assemblage theory, the author identifies contested energy spaces as complex places or situations that need to be understood through geographical concepts of place, scale, and power. In 6 chapters, the book challenges preconceptions of indigenous peoples as victims by examining communities that favor industrial developments, and identifies instabilities in the Canadian North to analyze the power relations between industry, state and indigenous communities. The book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, teachers and lecturers, and geography scholars. Chapter 1 introduces the concept of energy spaces, and addresses the main research question posed in the text; why do some indigenous communities support extractive industry developments on their traditional territories, despite substantial destruction of the local environment and traditional indigenous land use practices? Chapter 2 further elaborates on the conceptualization of contested energy spaces, and chapter 3 applies this to the study area in Alberta, Canada. Chapter 4 discusses the methodology of the research process, and chapter 5 presents empirical cases in Alberta, from the changing governance structures of energy spaces to the networking of local indigenous communities.
